I hired Down South Landscaping & Maintenance to do a "fall clean up" of my recently purchased property, which had not been properly maintained for a number of years. Michael Austin of Down South was one of the first to respond to my post on Angi. As requested, he promptly provided a detailed estimate for cleaning the yard and beds including, application of preemergent weed control. I also obtained and accepted Down South's remarkably reasonable estimate to trim all the bushes. Michael kept me informed about his schedule and arrived promptly on the morning we had targeted to begin the work. Michael worked side by side with his crew to complete the project within budget, and ahead of plan. More important, the quality of his work was outstanding. The lawn, beds, bushes, and previously untended "woods" look spectacular. I couldn't be happier--- so happy, that after receiving very reasonable written estimates, I have chosen Down South to handle my landscape maintenance including mowing, semi-annual clean-ups, gutters, and snow plowing as needed. ⁹

I needed a project done today as a surprise for my daughter Mike was the only one that called me back in a timely fashion and said heâ d be here in 30 to 45 minutes and he was I need to exactly what I asked him to. Michael Did a fabulous job. More importantly he was friendly, knowledgeable, and respectful of me, my home, my time, and my money. Prices quoted were great, and he was efficient in his work. I will definitely be using him for my lawn care for the rest of the season and will probably plan some actual landscaping for next spring.

Michael was completing some work for a neighbor of mine. I questioned him about an estimate on removing some bushes in my front and back yard. He gave me a price, which was great. This was mid-November. I told him that I was not in any hurry, and he could take his time with the job, as long as he was finished with the job by the time mowing season arrived. I told him that I wanted them removed by the root, so I could mow over that area and redo the landscaping in the front of the house. It is now mowing season. He has removed 5 of the 10 bushes outback, not by the root, therefore I have to find someone to grind down the stumps. I cannot mow over them. He has removed all of the bushes out front but left several roots, and I will have to find someone to remove those as well. I have always had to reach out to him, and when I did he would say he would be here that week but never showed up. I have debated on leaving this review as he is a very nice young man and a small business. I understand that he is busy, and I did advise him that he could take his time. But I am very disappointed in the service and work not completed.

Great experience

Michael (owner) is a very fine young man who delivers on what he says and performs professionally in every way. It is so hard to find people who are reliable and actually have their clients best interest at heart these days. That said, our experiences with his company have always been above and beyond our expectations. Highly recommend!! Also, I do not find support for any of the statements made by the one critical review on this site as those words cannot be true, in my opinion. No way.

Michael Austin at Down South Landscaping & Maintenance has done an excellent job helping us prepare the landscape on a 1 acre property in Roanoke County for sale. He has been very professional in his dealings with me, walking the property to figure out what is needed within reasonable budget, preparing a written quote that outlined the work to be done, and he proceeded to do exactly what we hired him to do. He shows up when he promises to and offered ideas on how to make the most bang for the buck for curb appeal. When I hired him, I was a little nervous because of one person’s recent review, but after talking with him quite a bit and seeing how hard he works and cares about the outcome, I 100% believe that the person who rated him low had some sort of axe to grind. Miscommunication at worst, as Michael is an absolute gentleman to work with. On my job, there were significant upfront materials cost for soil and mulch. Michael, having just had an issue where someone stiffed him on the cost of flowers and then threw him under the bus in their review over it, was very careful to explain that the upfront cost is for materials and the labor would be paid for on the day of the job. Poor guy just had someone review him very harshly after essentially getting free work and materials out of him. I have seen his work in action and he handles himself with the utmost professionalism and is a hardworking guy who is reasonable about cost and does what he says he will do. I would be happy to hire him again and wish I’d met him sooner. I absolutely recommend him and his services.

Prompt dependable

Poor customer service, when I asked for receipts when invoiced for $650 worth of plants. Had no problem with payment but providing receipts were a problem. Went back to the property and removed all the plants and left the water running. Thank goodness for videos cameras.

He takes care of both of my business. He does a great job.
