The 7 Ton Trane Heat Pump failed, so I called the factory service department. The trouble was determined to be a failed fan motor.
The technician asked me if I wanted the motor replaced and I indicated yes. He did not quote me a price. After he installed the new motor, the Tech left the failed motor with me. The person generating the invoice called me to get my approval to process the charge on my credit card. I asked her to tell me the price of the replacement motor, which she said was $832.00. I thought that was high, so I immediately took the failed motor to the most reputable motor distributor in Richmond, VA and they confirmed the winding was burned and quoted me an exact replacement motor, manufactured by the same manufacturer, for $305.00. When I appealed the pricing to the Service Manager, told him the price I had received from the local distributor and he said he would look into it and get back to me. The next day he called to say, he had "reviewed the pricing and there was nothing he could do." In summary, no one quoted me a price on the replacement motor and the service manager said that I could have supplied the motor if I had wanted too, but I was not told that until after the fact.
Apparently, it is the Trane service policy to charge these unreasonable prices for standard products available through local distributors.
