We liked everything about Arek until he actually did the work. He was friendly, professional, punctual, and seemed to know exactly what we needed. I wish we had actually looked at work he'd done in others' houses. It all started with the shutters on the side of the house when we noticed paint drips that hadn't been wiped up. These were little drips on the shutters themselves. I wouldn't have cared about them if they weren't right next to the front door where I would see them every day and get bothered by them. When I asked him to fix them, he said the drips were from the previous paint job. Fine, but that's part of the prep work--to sand down old paint jobs. He ended up fixing it to our satisfaction. Fast forward to the deck. It started to look good but he had installed the composite lattice work before painting the ends of the deck boards. We had resurfaced our deck but weren't able to stain it ourselves or install the lattice work. We had him remove it to paint the board ends and reinstall the lattice. We had asked him to install one more long board on the edge of the deck to reduce the gap next to the fence and we thought he had understand the details of what needed to be done but then we realized he had installed it with flimsly shelving brackets--not enough to hold the weight of a person standing on the board. We had him redo it, which he did. In the basement, we had some hideous wallpaper that just wouldn't come off. Instead of ripping it off and patching the drywall, he suggested that we install beadboard over the wallpaper and paint it white. Great idea, we thought. I have no idea where he got the beadboard but it was super rough and looked to me like exterior beadboard. He painted it and I think he would have left it rough if we hadn't insisted that he sand it. It's still rough, one can get splinters from it, and I think we'll have to redo it in the future. It looks nothing like white beadboard that I see in other places. He had removed the tile moulding to install the bead board and hadn't planned on putting it back until we insisited he put floor moulding instead (since he had disposed of the tiles--wait, he didn't dispose of them, he just left us a bag of trash in the front hall foyer for us to deal with). I wish I could show you pictures of how embarrasingly ugly this bathroom is. He didn't even bother to completely cover up the wall behind the toilet and so there's a big gap in the bead board behind the toilet. I'm looking at the estimate now and realized that repainting the entire bathroom was part of the estimate. But he didn't paint the ceiling or the door and the old antique white paint looks awful up against the bright white beadboard. He put corner molding in each of the four corners of the room prior to putting the chair rail/seam molding up. So there's this weird gap between each of the moldings where they meet at the corners. It was in the back-and forth of finishing the last things on the deck (that were part of the original estimate) and the powder room in order to get the remainder of his money that we made a mutual decision that a) we didn't want him to do other jobs on the house and b) he didn't want to work for us anymore. Maybe we are too picky but if I'm paying someone to do something that I physically can't do (I was pregnant at the time), they should do a better job of it than I would have done if I were able to do so. I am writing this report nine months later because I felt bad leaving a bad review about his work because we really do like him as a person and wanted to have him do so many other projects for us that we now have to find someone else to do. I wanted to just drop the issue. But every time I run across our invoice from him I wish that things had gone better.
Description of Work: - Painted shutters on one side of the house, cleaned, stained, and sealed our new deck, and did some final deck work (added lattice, added a few additional boards for safety and to hide the faucet). - Installed bead board over all the walls in the basement powder room and painted it (approximately $500).
