The main reason why we are giving Donofrio and Associates an F is due to Ed Donofrio’s unprofessionalism and lack of quality services. We hired Donofrio and Associates for a home inspection and a mold inspection because we are approaching the one-year mark on our new construction home. We also had previous issues with mold and flooding in our new house so the mold inspection was extremely important to us.
Our home inspection was scheduled for 1pm but I received a call and text from Ed at 9:30am that same day to move the inspection up to 11am because he had to take his wife to a doctor’s appointment. Being the reasonable and understanding people that we are, I said that I could leave work even earlier at 11:30am to be there at 12pm in order to accommodate his request. He then conducted the home inspection in which I felt that he was rushing, most likely to make sure he had time to take his wife to the doctor. He was not explaining much to me and when I asked if I should follow him around, he said no. In retrospect, I should have rescheduled the appointment when I noticed that he was rushing but this was the least of our issues with Ed. He then conducted a “mold inspection” with a bio pump and took an outdoor sample and an indoor sample. He provided his home inspection report with pictures and then said he would be in touch when he received the lab results for the mold inspection. Regarding the home inspection, there were discrepancies in what he found and what the builder found. Also, we discovered a leak in our roof that Ed had missed.
Several days later, we received the lab results via email with a message from Ed saying, “There is evidence of mold in the basement. It would be prudent for the builder to provide full remediation.” Being that we are not mold experts, we thought that what Ed gave us was enough to proceed with mold remediation and to provide this as evidence to our builder. Unfortunately it was not. After calling around to several mold remediation companies providing them what Ed gave us (lab results), all companies said that the report was incomplete and that there should be a written interpretation of the lab results and a list of recommendations from the inspector in order to proceed. After providing what Ed gave us to our builder, our builder said that the report was incomplete, that the lab results alone told them that we have no issues and that no further action is needed. After calling Haye’s Microbial Consulting (the lab Ed used to test the samples), I inquired about getting someone to interpret the lab results and they said that, “It is the inspector’s responsibility to provide an interpretation of the lab results.” Clearly, Ed Donofrio was the common denominator in all of this and it was Ed’s responsibility as a “mold inspector” to provide an interpretation of the lab results and recommendations.
After the home inspection, it was VERY difficult to actually get in touch with Ed. I consistently emailed and called his office often leaving messages because he does not pick up his phone and neither does the receptionist at his office. After a lot of back and forth through emails, Ed still refused to provide us a formal document of his interpretations and recommendations. He thought it was enough to say informally in an email that there is mold in the basement and that the builder should provide full remediation. This is clearly unprofessional and speaks to how this company operates. I even explained in an email that I would be happy to provide him with an example of what the mold remediation companies and builder are looking for, but he did not respond. We had the lab results, but they were meaningless without a written interpretation and recommendation from the inspector. After much frustration getting the run around from Ed, my husband called Ed’s phone at 8:30 pm and to our surprise Ed answered. My husband then proceeded to explain to Ed again what we needed in order to move forward with remediation. This phone conversation is when my husband and I were shocked with disbelief and left speechless. Ed Donofrio proceeded to yell at my husband and call him stupid. My husband then asked for our money back for the mold inspection, and he shouted, “I’m not giving you a dime!” My husband then explained to Ed that he often corresponds with a lot of companies in his line of work and that he has never been spoken to like this and has never spoken to a client the way Ed was speaking to us. Ed simply did not care. He then proceeded to chastise us for calling him at 8:30pm. Ed, how else are we supposed to get in touch with you after I left you several voicemails, emails, and messages with your receptionist and you refuse to return any of our calls? Clearly customer service is not a priority at Donofrio and Associates.
After the horrific phone conversation with Ed, which left me in tears and my husband in shock, we received an email from Ed 30 minutes later with the report we had been requesting for days. Ed, was it really necessary to make us jump through hoops and be berated on the phone in order for you to simply complete the job that you were paid to do? Then the next day, Ed sent an email saying, “I have decided to refund the fee for the Mold Bio Pump Testing. It is in everyone's best interests if we do not work together!” Clearly. We asked for our money back because we did not want to work with YOU anymore but you told us you would not give us a dime. It’s interesting how when a customer mentions the Better Business Bureau, unprofessional companies like Ed’s all of a sudden change their tune. The report that Ed finally sent was poorly written and speaks to the credibility of his company. Needless to say, we paid for a second opinion from a different mold inspection company that actually follows proper protocol.
After this awful experience, we did more homework and Donofrio and Associates are clearly not following proper protocol when doing mold inspections. There are several national mold inspection and testing companies that clearly outline their process unlike Ed’s company. This process is consistent with all other mold inspection and testing companies in the area. These companies are strictly mold inspection and testing, not remediation, because of course there is a conflict of interest. I also spoke with a representative who confirmed this and stated that handing a customer lab results without a written interpretation report is certainly not a standard procedure. If you are looking for a mold inspection and testing company, certainly do your research and find a company that only does testing, not remediation because there is a conflict of interest. Unfortunately, this alone won’t guarantee a quality experience just like the experience we had with Donofrio and Associates.
If you are looking for a home inspector, Donofrio and Associates are adequate at best. Due to way Ed Donofrio spoke to my husband and I, we highly recommend you look elsewhere. And if you are looking for a mold inspection, clearly run and don’t look back! Donofrio and Associates should seriously reconsider calling themselves “mold inspectors” and take “mold inspection” off of their list of services because clearly they are not qualified to perform this service. Please save yourself the time, stress, and sanity and go with a different company.
