Description of Work: I have had this company do some minor shoe repair for me, but primarily I went there to have luggage repaired. Mr. Torrey was honest and told me that my luggage couldn't be repaired or would cost more than it was worth. He is very honest and responsive.

 + -1 moreWhen I called them to find out how much it would cost and how long it would take the to fix my boots, I was told exactly how much it would cost and that it would take a week to perform the service. Dropping the boots off a week and a half later, the clerk at the desk informed me that the shop was currently so busy that it would more likely take up to two weeks. I stopped to see if my boots were ready a day before they were promised--they were, and I and was able to pick them up. I couldn't be happier with the communication, price, and quality of the shop's workmanship. It was well worth the 2 week wait. I will definitely go back to Sam Torrey's Shoe Repair for and recommend them highly.
Description of Work: Vibram (rubber) soles were applied over leather-soles on a pair of custom boots to make them less slippery.

Description of Work: Resoled a pair each of women's shoes and boots. Also, reattached the leather to the front of the boots, which had been pretty abused.

 + 0 moreI started using Sam Torry shoe service in the late 1970s when the current owner's father ran the place and the present owner was learning the trade (and the shop still has not changed an iota). You can get basic shoe repairs done anywhere (inlcluding here) -- but, when you have a real problem or you want to save an old pair of shoes that you love, take it to Sam Torrey's. He has repaired leather shoes, hiking boots, a 35 year old canvas backpack (on numerous occasions), suitcases (leather and other materials), belts and boots for us. The work is never anything except first rate -- and if the repair is unlikely to meet your expections, he tells you about the problems in advance so you will not be disappointed with the outcome. The prices (which you pay in advance) are at the higher end of comparable shops but this is really a case where you get what you pay for. Do not take anything for repair that you need in 48 hours (or usually even the same week) -- the place is always too busy for a quick turnaround.
Description of Work: The most recent instance was the repair (yet again) of an ancient Forest Service backpack that he has done in the past (and always suggests that it is time to replace it.) Repair of leather handbags and suitcases, replace standard soles for very expensive men's and wolmen's leather shoes and Vibram soles for hiking boots; moved a buckle (i.e. shorted the belt) when the buckle wore out the cinch holding it. etc.

 + -1 moreI have used this company for many years. Reliable and professional. Only catch was they asked me to pay up front. I knew their quality and reputation, so it wasn't an issue for me.
Description of Work: Replace heel on new pair of shoes. I bought a new pair of Johnson Murphy's that were made in Italy. The heel was made of 1/2 rubber and the other a hard surface- it casused me to slip on marble surfaces. ST replaced it with all rubber heel. Works fine!

Description of Work: We recently had to pairs of shoes repaired by Sam Torrey s. Women s dress shoe: My wife damaged the heel of a pair of dress shoes walking over a particularly wide grill in a ventilation grate above a metro station. The grate scraped and tore the leather. Sam Torrey s was able to repair and reset the leather and now they look as good as new, which is a particularly tricky accomplishment for bone colored leather. Men s dress shoe: A loose piece of Formica laminate on a salad cart had torn a deep gouge in a pair of dress shoes I purchased in the UK. Not wanting to trash them over such a stupid accident, I took them to Sam Torrey hoping they d be able to repair them somehow. They did a fantastic job steaming, stretching and buffing out the leather of the damaged area. While the shoes will never look brand new, only somebody looking at them from a few inches away will be able to tell they have been repaired. The folks at Sam Torrey s are true professionals with a deep knowledge of the product who take pride in their work -- which is increasingly rare in an economy dominated by un-informed, under-paid sales-drones who simply want to take your money and send you out the door with a box of crap made in China. We couldn t be happier with their work and we plan to use Sam Torrey for all our future shoe repair and refurbishment needs and recommend them without hesitation to all local Angie s List subscribers.

 + -1 moreThe shop keeper was cautious before telling me that he could repair the suitcase. He gave an estimate before finding out that in fact the company no longer provides him with free replacement handles. When he discovered that the cost of the handle uninstalled was $50, he hesitated to charge me more than the estimate, saying that he tries to be fair to the customer. As always, they do professional quality work, and don't hesitate to say when they don't think the item is worth repairing.
Description of Work: We had a piece of luggage repaired, specifically the handle needed to be replaced along with some of the rivets. This was damage done by the airline.

I picked them up the following Saturday (right on time), and not only were all items repaired to my satisfaction, each had been cleaned up and almost looked like new.  + -1 moreSeveral other shoe or luggage repair shops I took the bag to declined to do this work, telling me it was too time-consuming and would be less expensive to replace the bag, which I did not want to do, as it had sentimental value to my son. Sam Torrey's owner gladly accepted the work, and told me only new slides were needed, not a new zipper. The work was completed to my complete satisfaction in just one week.
Description of Work: I took a large athletic bag to Sam Torrey Shoe Repair for replacement of a very long, broken zipper. Instead of replacement, owner told me that only new slides were needed.
