Everyone with the company was very professional and responsive.
I has wished that the drain would have emptied unto the sidewalk but the Town of Vienna refused.
The work was done exactly as planned and in the timeline communicated.
I highly recommend this service provider and would use them in the future.
My wife and I bought a house that needed substantial re-grading and drainage work done to deal with water issues affecting our basement. I contacted Newborg based on high ratings on Angie's List, other consumer rating services, and personal referrals.
Due to all the heavy rain we've been receiving in the area, there is huge demand for landscaping and drainage services. As such I had to wait entire month for my initial consultation with Newborg. They also charge $75 for the consult--the only one of 5 companies I consulted with that charged such a fee. That's not my main beef.
My big issue is that Newborg's estimate for the work came in astronomically high--nearly $7,000, compared to other estimates for comparable work that ranged from $2,000 to a high of $4,700 for other contractors. I ended up getting the work done for a tad over $2,000 by a company that is highly rated on Angie's List, well-established, and highly reputable. I believe that Newborg, taking advantage of the unusually high demand in the area for landscaping and drainage services in the area due to the recent extreme weather--and the desperation of many homeowners, like me, dealing with leaky and flooding basements--tried to gouge me.
When I questioned the estimate with the company, the owner contacted me directly, claiming that there must be a significant difference in the scope of work to account for the huge difference in the price estimates I'd received. I suspect that his purpose in reaching out to me was primarily to try to avoid getting a negative review on Angie's List. In any event, while there were some modest differences in the scopes of the various estimates, the basic work to be performed was substantially the same for all the estimates--add clay topsoil to raise the grade around the perimeter of the house, replace two window wells, and add downspout extenders with pop-up emitters. There were a couple of items that Newborg proposed to do that others didn't, but these were fairly modest and could not possibly account for the huge price difference--they wanted to charge more than triple the cost of what I ended up paying! And the contractors I used, for their part, performed some work items that weren't in Newborg's scope.
I recognize that Newborg is highly rated by many, and my experience may simply be an outlier. Or it may be that Newborg is taking advantage of recent conditions of extremely high demand to try to rip people off. Either way, if you do reach out to Newborg, make sure that you get quotes from multiple contractors so that you can compare prices.
"We regret that we left a bad taste in your mouth regarding our services. I assure you that the owner, Steven Newborg, replied to your questions about the pricing so as to provide excellent service. We never try to 'gouge' any one and are very clear and upfront with how much we charge and the work that will be performed. We are not cheap and do not do cheap work. We feel confident that we provided a clear and honest estimate."
"[Member Name], Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We are reviewing and rewriting our voice mail message. We will be re-recording it in the near future. We apologize for the frustration this has caused you. Sincerely, Newborg Drainage & Landscaping"
