My wife and I own a small home on a tiny piece of property in Arlington, Virginia. I've got a bad back and I just can't maneuver a lawnmower on our steep hillside lot. Several years ago, we began using John Page's Faces of Nature because some of our neighbors did, and the price was ok. But there have been significant problems throughout that time, and I was too darn lazy to go about the trouble of finding a replacement. During the summer of 2008, we asked him to do some tree, drainage and fence-related work for us. One month later, he gave us an estimate, and we told him to go ahead. He never did the work. We never paid for it, either, and we had someone else do the job. So we figured we would just continue to have him mow our lawn. Then, the following summer, one of his employees whom we recognized appeared on our front lawn and told us that his car had broken down and could we loan him $30. Since we recognized him as one of John Page's guys, we thought the story was legitimate and we gave him the money. We never saw him again and, when we asked Mr. Page about it, he laughed and said it was a "disgruntled former employee".
Overall, the work he and his staff performed was barely adequate. On the plus side he always showed up. On the down side, he and his staff were completely unresponsive to any request or direction we made. For example, no matter what you told him or his people, they would always cut the grass way too short, which, in turn caused disease (which he offered to rectify for additional cash). Furthermore, his people were always careless of my property. For months, I found cigarette butts in my bushes and on my driveway after his men had visited. After repeated requests to stop, they finally did when we threatened to take our business elsewhere. They also ALWAYS left our rear gate open, despite our many requests that they close it when they leave. Today, I returned home from work to let our dog out in our yard and, unfortunately, I was distracted by a pressing telephone conversation and I did not notice the open gate. Our beloved pet beagle escaped through the open gate. Our entire neighborhood went our looking for him and we ultimately did find him, but John's response was sneering and unapologetic. Needless to say, we fired him. This is not someone you want on your property. Look elsewhere for lawn service.
