"It has been illegal since July 1, 2011 to act as a remediation contractor and mold tester/inspector on the same jobsite in Virginia. I told the husband this is also forbidden by the Code of Conduct for the American Council of Accredited Certifications due to the “inherent conflict of interest”. I was referred by a Professional Engineer doing drainage work for the clients. The husband claims to work in the construction industry. I admit to being very late with the report but, we were hit with an earthquake, Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. I put my business on hold to address damage to my home and two cases involving medical referral clients undergoing extensive mold remediation by a remediation contractor. I did not receive any calls or emails after the earthquake requesting the report or follow-up. As far as the character assassination, I can say I carry professional insurance unlike scam artists or charlatans. I always ask if there are health complaints or issues. I do not discuss my connection or health complaints to others but, this situation was made public by the member.. The member stated her husband has asthma. The US EPA states mold is a known trigger for asthma. I could smell the characteristic odor of wet soil from the crawlspace after entering the front door. I told the member about my work with Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker’s patients. I wrote a chapter in his newest book, “Surviving Mold”. Many of his patients are diagnosed as “asthmatic” by other MDs but, they really have high C4a which is complimentary protein from T cell reactions that also acts as an anaphylatoxin continuously floating around the circulatory system to inhibit pulmonary function. Another issue with asthma for males is the development of erectile dysfunction. (Manufacturers of ED medication have to give a disclaimer about underlying problems such as asthma, diabetes, etc.) Both of these conditions are not improved with corticosteroids commonly used to control asthma. Males have been shown to pay less attention to their health and suffer in silence. All I can do is point them in the direction of having a qualified MD perform a proper differential diagnosis with treatment. I reference Dr. Shoemaker because he has done the research but, they can see whoever they want. It does not matter what you do to address the indoor microbial problems if you fail to address the underlying medical problems. I have seen this repeated. I usually get called after someone takes a first stab at addressing a mold problem and health complaints get worse not better. I have found customers need to understand they also have work to do. I also did not try to take samples because the problem was obvious to me from several years of experience. I do this to save customer money when it is appropriate. I always get a down-payment to avoid getting stiffed. It does happen more in a bad economy. Normally, people charge a low fee so they can get work which is a conflict of interest and illegal in Virginia. Many mold inspectors will charge approximately $800 to take a couple of spore trap air samples ($35 lab fee each) and write a 3 page bullet point document with vague language for remediation the customer could not possibly understand. This means they have no idea if the remediation contractor is doing what they are supposed to do. My report and remediation plan is 18 pages for this case and has options for different cleaning methods with product specifications for chemically sensitive people. I apologize for the delay but, the report was ¾ done and I’ve spent time on this site. I did go into the crawlspace just far enough to note the wood was not visually moldy but, the plumbing penetrations were not air sealed. The soil is loaded with mold and bacteria that release into the structure. This is why I could smell wet soil. This is the most bizarre claim I have ever had."
