Work performed seems to be ok but the price charged was a complete rip-off!

Jim the Handyman referred us to Scott when we needed to replace our kitchen faucet. We were very happy with the work, and asked him about some other items we had been considering. Eventually, Scott replaced our water heater and laundry sink, snaked out a bothersome floor drain, replaced the pressure-relief valve on our water line, and replaced an out-of-code water line tap for our central humidifier. We agreed on a price and schedule for each job, and he did the work as promised. What more could one ask for?

We noticed leaking in the ceiling bathroom below the leaking toilet above and assumed that we had a leaking wax ring. Jim the Handyman recommended Scott Gallagher Plumbing as they call him for all their work. I called Scott and he came out the next morning to take a look. He had quoted me $295 to remove/replace toilet and replace the wax ring. After he popped the toilet, it was quite apparent that the leaking damage had been a long time in the works and the subfloor was so deteriorated that there was nothing sufficient to bolt the toilet to. I could never get a firm price on what the end cost would be, since Scott kept giving me and quot;what ifand quot; scenarios on what may happen along the way as he attempted to drill out the plastic pipe to install an extension to the 3 inch pipe to elevate the new ring to the proper level of the floor plane. I felt a bit trapped since I had no other recourse than to proceed with the repairs. Since he left the cost generally open ended, I was quite surprised that the end cost was $2,000. He had to bring in a carpenter to do the sub-flooring and durarock repairs, and a floor tile man to replace the porcelain tile. All the work was performed in an excellent manner. I watched the work each step of the way and am satisfied with the quality of the repairs. Scott Gallagher is a consummate professional and knows his trade in and out. I will definitely call on him again because I know the work will be done right. He also gave me to free advice on another toilet issue I may have to address in the near future. Total cost of this whole leaking toilet escapade is $2,600 ($600 to Jim the Handyman on 7 Feb to repair ceiling below, see that review).

1. This visit was wonderful ..... I was not sure of the problem but it is looking like it is not a plumbing issue. Scott came and spent a good amount of time not only checking the plumbing in the potential problem area but once he had thoroughly investigated the area, he investigated further to look for other potential causes of the leak we were experiencing. He gave several options and gave his opinion on the most likely one so that I had a next step to follow. I also asked him a number of other questions during that visit and he spent a good amount of time making sure all my questions were answered to my full understanding. He did charge for the visit but I kept him there for quite a while and being in a service industry, myself I expected no less given the amount of time he spent. He would not have charged had I not kept him there so long asking all the extra questions. ($175)2. Very prompt response and reasonable price. Professional all the way! ($175)3. Very prompt response, price was reasonable. Professional. He also gave additional advice on my other faucets such as exactly how to winterize them (which did not include additional services from him making me feel that any service recommendations he gives is not about just getting more money from me ... any service recommendations he gives I would follow through on as I feel that he is not just trying to make more money). ($350)84. This is the only interaction that I have had issues with and the only reason that He did not get A's across the board. I have been trying to get him in for a couple weeks now to look into this problem. Not sure what is going on but I have gotten sporadic call backs when I was told they would call. I have yet to get him out here and scheduled. The one time his manager called specifically to set up a time he did not have the schedule for the week I needed available and said he would call back - that was about 4 days ago. FOr this job I am considering calling another plumber as I am getting frustrated with the problem continuing. However, given my previous expereinces with him, I would still recommend him highly and would use him again.

Scott came recommended from another highly rated Angie's List service provider. He was prompt, professional, explained what he would do, did it, and thoroughly cleaned up afterwards.

They came out, recommended a solution (replacing the interior shutoff valves), and proceeded to recommend a million other things to replace...including our recently replaced water heater. Felt like I was working with a car dealer the entire time -- "...and of course you'll want the extended warranty so we'll just add that in...". Couldn't wait for them to leave, and when they did the final bill was higher than their up-front estimate by about $50. Even worse, the problem was still there after they left (although a bit improved, it wasn't completely gone). We had to have another plumber come out a few months later to finally fix the problem for good.

He is probably the most honest contractor that I have ever dealt with anywhere. He was professional and on time. He told me exactly what he was going to do. On the job with the pipe under the concrete floor, I did try to get other estimates and some were really trying to rip me off. Scott is a top notch plumber and business person and I cannot recommend him highly enough. If someone has a plumbing problem, he will figure it out and fix it.
