The gentlemen who came to my home who were Bathmaster employees were wonderful! I can't say enough about how talented and professional they all were. They totally covered everything in their path through the house to the bathroom in plastic and paper to protect the floors and furnishings. They cleaned up after themselves every day. There was barely any extra dust anywhere.
The were also very quick. They showed up every day exactly when they said they would. If something came up where they couldn''t come when they said they would Robert, the project manager, would call me. They got everything done up to the installation of the countertop, the seat in the shower, and the ledge for the shower in about two weeks. That included the tear-out, the plumbing and electric, the drywall and trim, the tile, the vanity cabinet, the toilet and the painting.
Then it was time to install the countertop. I wish I could say that part of the experience was as great as the rest but it was not. The subcontractor who installed the countertop, the seat in the shower, and the ledge for the shower did it all wrong. First they didn't have it ready when they said they would. They came to measure for it on July 1 and they didn't have it ready until July 28. Then they were supposed to be at our house around lunchtime but didn't show up until nearly 5 PM. They called Robert to ask about how to drill for the faucet. He told them it was 8" and they drilled for 4". They did a lousy job on the ledge which was off center with an overhang that was almost an inch wider at one end than it was at the other. When the plumber came the next day to install the faucet of course it didn't fit. He installed a temporary one just so we would have something to use.
BATHMASTERS MADE ALL OF THIS RIGHT FOR US! I can't stress that enough. They were wonderful! The project manager contacted the countertop people and had them come back with a new countertop. In addition the owner of Bathmasters came to our house to look at what had been done. He got out is level to check the seat and ledges and discovered that not only where was the ledge overhang out of whack, the ledge and seat were not angled towards the drain. The seat was angled towards the wall so water would have pooled there. He called the countertop people to tell them they needed to make that right. Then, when the countertop people came back he came, too, and oversaw the entire process to assure that it was ALL DONE CORRECTLY the second time around. He also told me that they would be looking for an different company to use to provide countertops going forward because Bathmasters doesn't want that kind of company representing their work or treating their customers that way.
Once the countertop and ledgers were done correctly and the correct faucet was installed by their plumber Bathmasters sent one of their own guys to finish up. He did a great job, just like the other Bathmaster employees did. After he left my husband noticed two relatively small things that were overlooked. I called Robert and he had someone at my house THE NEXT DAY to fix these two very small things.
The last step was the glass shower door. It was separate from our Bathmasters contract but they did recommend the vendor. That company showed up on time, had the glass done when they said they would, and did a beautiful job with the installation. My grandkids were here last weekend and they looked a little awestruck by the expanse of glass.
I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND Bathmasters to anyone looking to remodel a bathroom. Everyone I dealt with there is friendly, helpful, honest and hardworking.
GNA does all of its own work -- no subcontracting for electrical, plumbing, or tiling -- so you see the same two-person crew (a master tradesman and an assistant) and support staff every day; this means there is no down/wasted time waiting for sub-contractors to show up (important to us, as we wanted the entire project completed within two weeks) and that GNA alone is accountable. We also had very good interactions with GNA's designer, Chas Oliver, throughout the project; he was personable, informative, and no-pressure. While GNA's estimate came in about $1500 higher than the least-expensive bid we received, we contracted with GNA primarily because of these qualities and the design/estimate-stage interaction we had with Chas.
A short-notice issue within our high-rise condo (taking power off-line for a day for preventive maintenance) caused GNA to change crews on us about a third of the way through the project; that said, both crews we dealt with were professional and personable and GNA accommodated that inconvenience nicely. They discovered and replaced a nearly-compromised section of copper plumbing (technically outside the scope of their work), the quality of their work was absolutely first-rate, they cleaned up after themselves, and did a fairly good job of complying with our condo staff's procedures for utilizing the loading dock/freight elevator.
We had only one real issue during the project: unmet expectations about the role of the "project manager." Now, to be fair, GNA never really defined the project manager's role for us. We assumed that the project manager would check on the project, in person, about every other day and that we would address any questions/concerns to him. That did not occur. We saw the project manager only once in the first six project-days and, on a couple of occasions, had to direct questions to Chas Oliver. In hindsight, I wish we had clarified the project manager's role/expectations at the outset; in our experience, he seemed superfluous to the project.
They were quite responsive at the beginning. getting the design and picking out materials. The project wound up starting a week late because of a miscommunication on their end with scheduling. So it started the 2nd week of November. Sometimes I had a work crew here and then days and weeks would go by without anyone being here and no notification of what was going on. Over the holidays, everyone went on vacation and no one responded to any contact attempts. I rarely saw the project manager and the designer's wife was due for a baby and so he became unavailable as well. They technically finished on Christmas Eve, but left it in a mess. They didn't bother to even wipe down the dust on and in the cabinets and many of them were smeared with fingerprints and dirt.
They also installed an after-market pull-out spice rack in a 9" cabinet that sits between the microwave hood and the wall of the double-oven cabinet. Since this did not go the full length of the cabinet and the microwave/hood combo protruded, you couldn't even access anything on this rack. This was an obvious oversight on the part of the designer, and the installer said he realized the problem, but proceeded with the installation without asking me. I work from home, so I was almost always here and was here the day he installed this. He drilled holes in the bottom and sides of this cabinet to install this. Then I was told it would be too much work to replace it, as they'd have to remove crown molding. They put a skin down inside the cabinet, and filled the holes underneath with filler, but it looks different than all the other cabinets when you open it or look up at the bottom. I spent almost $40K for this?
The other thing which really aggravated me was that I provided a punch list of items that were not right - including the pullout cabinet, obvious nail holes in the crown molding and a chip in the granite when they installed the cooktop. The chip is along the edge, so it is accumulating grease and grime and since the granite has a high mica content, I can't really take a scrub brush to this area to get it clean. It took them until February or March to address any of these issues, at which point I was told the granite place would charge to come back, so I have to live with the chip. I'm sorry it took you so long to get your act together, so now I have to live with chipped granite??
Also - they put a seam in the granite in an very obvious area. I was told this was unavoidable due to it being in a condo. But it was very rough. They came out to smooth it out, but then it was a very large dull area. They had to come a 2nd time. It looks better than it did, but it is still very obvious there is a seam there. And this was very expensive granite.
I then started having intermittent issues with the ceiling fan light and fan not turning on or off with the wall switch. It took 2 weeks for them to schedule a maintenance visit, by which time it was working again. They checked the wiring and said they found no problem. The light continues to act up and I was told there was nothing more they could do. That I should contact the warranty dept for the switch and/or exchange it at Home Depot. Fine, except they threw out all the packaging materials and instructions, so I have no warranty information for it. So I will now have to buy another remote and pay an electrician to come in and change it out, as I am not physically capable of uninstalling and reinstalling the fan. So in other words, they've procrastinated on things long enough to run out the warranty on their work.
And as I said, communication throughout the project was almost non-existent. Except for Trudy, who called looking for their checks within moments of the start of the payment points. For instance, a certain amount was due at the time tilework begain - the adhesive was barely mixed and my phone was ringing to ask what time she could pick up the money.
Since I did have to run out from time to time, I had them put a lockbox on the door and provided a building access fob and condo key on a ring. They had not been out for well over a month and finally sent a worker to do some of the punch list items on a Monday. I had a family emergency on Wednesday and emailed to get the code for the lockbox, as that was my only spare key and I expected I might need it in a hurry to give to a neighbor to come in and feed the cats if I had to leave. When I opened the lockbox, the only thing in there was the fob - no key. The workman that had been here on Monday claimed the key had been there, but they checked with everyone and there was no explanation of what happened to my key. There was no offer to reimburse me for the $80 it cost me to have my locks changed out.
Would I recommend them? With caution. Aside from the jury-rigged cabinet and the chip in the granite, I am happy with how the kitchen turned out. The designed did a good job with helping to pick out the tile and things to coordinate with the cabinets and the kitchen really is beautiful. But I would recommend that you purchase everything through them, so they are responsible for it and you're not winding up $$$$'s over budget. And expect it to take a very long time and to have very little communication regarding what is going on and when workmen will be there or not.
