Kingstowne Lawn & Landscape was established by Krisjan Berzins and Phil Williams in 1997. Both graduated in 1993 from Mount Vernon High School in Alexandria, Virginia, and were members of the varsity football team when they began their friendship. Phil attended Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., where he studied sociology. Krisjan attended Randolph Macon College in Ashland, Virginia, where he studied international business. Krisjan’s experience working in grounds maintenance at the Mount Vernon Country Club and Phil’s discipline and strong business sense formed the foundation for an ideal partnership, and the two began working together in 1997. After only 10 years in business, they had grown Kingstowne Lawn & Landscape into one of the most recognized landscape brands in Northern Virginia—with annual gross revenues of more than $5 million. In early 2008, Krisjan purchased Phil’s share of the corporation and became sole owner of Kingstowne Lawn & Landscape. While he was disappointed to see Phil go, Krisjan knew that he was ready to write the next chapter of the Kingstowne story. Today, nearly 20 successful years of business, Krisjan and his wife, Mayra, head a strong company with over 50 employees, 25 trucks, and 13 acre corporate campus, inside the beltway, in Alexandria, Virginia. Their company’s success lies in the firm belief that every customer should be treated as the “only” customer!

Kingstowne has taken care of our landscaping needs for many years. They are probably not the cheapest but they are the best. I think we have a beautiful but kind of complicated landscape. They take careful care of our yard with crews that are friendly and courteous - nice guys who work hard and do meticulous work.

We have used Kingstowne for almost all of our outdoor needs, consolidating the work to one company after several positive experiences. Over the last few years, they have fertilized/aerated our lawn, performed mulching and weeding, landscaped one side of our yard with new trees/plants, and replaced/rebuilt our back yard deck and patio space (Trex decking, re-laying the stone for our patio). Working with Kingstowne has been a pleasure - Amanda and the design team are top notch and incredibly responsive, Tim and the lawn team have been great, and we've never had a complaint about the quality of the work done in the yard. Their prices might be a bit more than some other quotes, but I think you get what you pay for - our lawn looks better than it did using another fertilizer service, our mulch beds look terrific, and our back yard finally looks as good as the front of the house. I'd use Kingstowne again in a heartbeat!

I contacted several companies, one of which was Kingstowne, to have a landscape designer come out and provide pricing and proposals for a backyard renovation we are doing. It’s a small, 20’x30’ yard, but it will require a retaining wall, a lower patio, and a 12’x16’ deck, and we knew the basic layout we wanted and had done our homework on zoning and code requirements. Kingstowne was the only one that required a $50 payment for the upfront visit, but after looking at their great reputation I figured there was a good chance I would be going with them anyway, so I paid. Amanda came and visited, which went fine, but I was surprised at how little information she was taking down. She said it would be at least a week until she had a full proposal together, but she would follow up with a ballpark cost by the end of the week. Not only have I not received that ballpark cost, but I have yet to hear back from the designer or the company in general after waiting more than a week. I understand that this is the busy time of year, but if you’re going to charge money up front for initial visits, I would at least expect timely responses, follow ups, etc. Not pleased with my experience and can only assume the rest of the process would have been more of the same.

After our contract was signed they promptly visited the house for the first lawn treatment. The other work took a little longer to schedule due to weather, but once they said they'd be out, they came on the day promised. The work was performed in one day and they did a super job. The thickness of the mulch they spread seems better than the previous company we hired last year, The bushes were nicely pruned and the entire backyard was cleaned up. No more sticks from the storms!

I like them a lot. They were really good. They did what they said they would do, they showed up on time, the designer was really lovely, very accomodating, and easy to work with. Everything is pretty expensive around here, but as far as this area I think the price was pretty fair. They came on schedule, and kept me notified. Their work was excellent. They were prompt, and easy to work with. The trees that they put in were very nice.They were big trees, and they were good trees. They all look great.

They've been doing weekly yard maintenance during the growing season for many years now. It's $20 a time they come out. It's monthly billing based on the number of days they come out, so it's either between $80 and $100 a month. Twice a year they do additional lawn fertilization and leaf pickup, and that's an additional.

It was one of the worst experiences I had. I had to pay a 175 dollars and wait almost four weeks to have the service done. In the meantime that I got an HOA notification that my yard was out of regulations. I called to see if there was something they could do. Which it really wasn't. I ask for a refund for the services never done . Which took an additional two weeks and they charge 50 dollars fee.

They were great. I used them for one time but they had a fall cutting and a winter cutting. I paid them for the fall and then they came out and I paid them for the winter one. Together they were about $500. I thought they were fantastic. I am recommending them to my son; they are good.

Paid $50 to have their designer come to my home to give an estimate for a patio, retaining wall and lawn renovation. The designer was very nice and had some good ideas. He took a few days, and got back to me with a drawn up design and estimate. For demo of a large existing deck, a 400sf patio and a 40'X2' retaining wall the estimate was $30-50,000, depending on the material used. To condition a 7000sf lawn and plant grass seed was $7,000, if I cleared all debris and sprayed a herbicide before they showed. For an additional $800 they would spray it for me. I found another contractor for the retaining wall and patio. Job was completed for about $14K. The lawn I did myself, in 2 days, for a total cost of about $1K

It was pricey. For the amount of work they did, I'd give them an A. They did everything. The quality was great. If we call them, they come out. I would use them but I would also check around.

It was cheap. It was only 8 or $900. I used him for several projects. I bought a certificate from Angie's List for $50 for a consult. I got a consult for that and I got a couple of other guys to give me an estimate on the same thing and I liked theirs better. I used him for three projects. They installed about 8 or $9000 worth of landscaping for me on the other side of the house. They were pretty reasonable. The design consultant was very nice and very professional. I liked her ideas. They came when they said they would come. They gave me notifications of when they came a couple of days ahead of time. They cleaned up the job. They just did everything as they should. They were professional. They brought nice trees. I bought a lot of big trees from them.

I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS COMPANY to anyone who cares about customer service. I have dealt with them for about a month and had to cancel part of the services I signed up for due to multiple errors on their part. Also, complaints only got a long list of excuses. The more times they said to me, "This is not an excuse, but a reason," the more I knew they didn't care about apologizing for their mistakes and were just presenting me with a snow job. I heard how time, the wind blowing notices off my door, the post office removing things from my mailbox, computer errors, and the definition of a side yard and what constitutes standing on a mower were all blamed for their errors. They agreed that I did not do anything wrong, but had no real reasons for my treatment. I was accused of watering the lawn before a mowing when they did not let me know of the scheduled date for the mowing; I was rudely treated by the crew and accused of not paying enough for the services I wanted when everything I asked for was actually in writing; services were not performed that were in the contract and to date have not been performed. I felt belittled and blamed for their mistakes. I can't really rate the quality of the services and not much was done by them. I can only say that proper customer treatment is not part of their service.
