The first clue that this job was going south was the shifting times for actual work start date. When work finally began, we discovered that the cabinets they hung were not the size that we ordered. When pressed on this, the contractor stated that he ordered exactly what we asked for, which was a certain measurement. This wasn't the case: we actually said we wanted the cabinets to go to the ceiling. He argued that this was over the proposal budget, but he had never given us the option of seeing the differences in cost. In fact, the contractor kept NO RECORDS of the job. We pressed him time and again for a project plan, emails, ANYTHING written down on paper that could prove a logical order of request. He refused every time, stating, and quot;I'm not in the habit of writing things down, and I haven't been for 30 years.and quot;
This type of unprofessionalism deeply disturbed us, and we felt that we were being bullied into accepting something that we hadn't requested because they had made a mistake and wouldn't own up to it. Calls to the owner went unanswered. Furthermore, the contractor continued to nickel and dime us on and quot;other costsand quot; like the grout for the backsplash or electrical work for the light above the sink. We ended up paying about 30% more than anticipated just to finish the job. Worse, the work was done sloppily: we kept having to have contractors come over and fix things like dings in the new cabinets and blemishes in the paint.
Ultimately, we like the kitchen we have now even though it's not the one we wanted or ordered. The ordeal of dealing with this contractor was not worth the quality of work we got, the time it took, or the price. We will never work with FWD again. For all you first-time remodelers, learn from our mistakes: get everything in writing and make that a condition of signing the contractor. We would gladly have paid more to have better project management.
The supervisor and point of contact for the job was Dave Simmons. Beware of this guy. He is unpleasant to put it mildly. From the start, dealing with him was an adversarial process. Simple questions were met with arrogant and dismissive responses, concerns about the job were met with defensiveness, and miscommunication and confusion were quickly blamed on me. Unfortunately, I needed to get this work done in short order or I would have waited and/or shopped around. I think Dave Simmons sensed this and charged $3,000 to install a bathroom exhaust fan and ceiling fan that I purchased separately. My clear impression is that this guy will take advantage of you if he thinks he can get away with it. Worth noting, Dave tried to charge me $75 simply to have his guys, who were already in my home, take a cursory look at my kitchen track lighting and tell me that I would likely need to purchase another system. He quickly reversed the charge after I objected.
I visited Ned Overton, the company's owner, to express my concerns about Simmons. Ned is a really nice guy, but seems to have very little interest in the professionalism of his operation. He quickly but politely brushed off my concerns about Simmons (noting that several other customers have had similar complaints) and asked that I keep FWand D in mind when I need more work done.
I plan to have additional remodeling work done on my home, but will be going with another contractor. My recommendation would be to do the same. Remodeling/home improvement jobs cost too much money to have to deal with a company like this.
The initial installation was a year ago, and I am as satisfied one year on as I was immediately after the job's completion.
Their job at installing windows was superior to the job done to install closet doors. The workers for the first job seemed extremely skilled at what they were doing.
The second job, the workers had to use the directions in the package to figure out how to install the doors. This was not very reassuring. Further, the product was of Home Depot quality. My trust in the company for the price we paid was lowered. However, we had an issue with the closet doors they installed - one broke - and their manager came out personally the next day and fixed it. This helped to restore my trust and I will likely use them again because of it. Not to mention that they replaced a broken toilet flange that occurred when I was replacing a toilet while they were on site. I've had too many issues with prior contractors who mess up things or don't do a good job the first time and suddenly become hard to reach or difficult.
It's by far not the cheapest company around for work but provides far better quality than a handyman. The company is a GC and is going to have higher overhead costs. The difference is this GC provides excellent customer service and stands behind their work.
