"Thank you so much for the review! it was very nice working with you and helping you with your project!"
Overall, we are very pleased with the job done and professionalism of Joey and his crew. Our floors look brand new and the guys did exactly what he had asked. Thank you, Dominion Carpet for the outstanding customer service!
As a now retired contractor (with an "A" rating on Angieslist!), I know how hard it is for projects to progress smoothly from conception to completion. While I am satisfied with most of the installation, there were HUGE mis-steps along the way.
Joey (sales guy) was extremely quick to respond for estimate request. I know what my personal tastes are but I really know nothing about what is popular and stylish in the marketplace now and as I explained to Joey ,since I am getting my house ready to sell, I wanted to appeal to the broadest audience of potential home buyers. This was a mistake on my part trusting that he would give honest advice as a flooring professional. There was no problem with the recommendations for the hardwood and carpet in the upstairs area. I was a little skeptical about his recommendation for the laminate in the downstairs hallway and kitchen for the in-law suite, but as he put it, "THIS IS WHAT WE CALL PART OF OUR GET IT SOLD NOW PRODUCTS THAT ALL THE REALTORS, HOME BUYERS AND FLIPPERS ARE LOOKING FOR IN A HOME". Based on this statement, I agreed to it.
After installation, I went to the manufacturers website (Anderson Wood) to register the product for warranty administration in case there was ever a problem only to find out that the specific laminate that had been installed was DISCONTINUED last year. As a former sales person myself, I know there is a fine line between extolling the virtues of your product and simply lying to get rid the product. I firmly believe that line was clearly crossed in this situation.
Other areas of concern with the installation was scheduling. As planned, Juan the crew leader that was going to do the installation delivered the materials in advance on Wednesday to familiarize himself with the site and see if I had any particular concerns. Dominion Carpets "normal" plan is take the trim plate off the bottom front of the dishwasher, run the hardwood as close as possible to the dishwasher (and oven), then re-install the trim plate. Unless you install one board under the adjustable front legs of the appliance, you will never be able to remove and replace that appliance without ripping up 2-3 floor boards. The installer agreed to do it so I felt much better knowing the same guys were coming back on Friday and probably complete the entire job in one day, but if needed would come back Saturday to finish. Friday rolls around, Juan calls and postpones until Saturday but promises to come back Sunday if needed.
Saturday comes, Ruben and his crew (not Juan and crew) show up so I had to review the entire project with him including the board under the dishwasher drill. They got maybe halfway done, and at about 4PM packed up and said "See you Monday". My head about exploded, contacted Joey and he said he would get the crew to return on Sunday. Sunday morning Juan and his crew arrive to pickup where Ruben and his crew left off. By 2PM they ran out of materials and packed up and left saying they would be back Monday to finish. Monday rolls around and here comes Ruben and his crew with additional materials to finish up.
I really can't say enough about how well the crews worked and what an outstanding job they did. They did break a ceramic tile putting in the threshold to the bathroom but I am not overly concerned because I am replacing the tile in that room anyway, but it would have been nice for someone to fess up and bring it to my attention instead of just leaving it for me to find. Otherwise it was a good group of workers that generally did great work but I feel bad for them that they don't have better leadership. I sincerely believe trust and integrity start at the top and filters down through the ranks. If the workers see the boss "stretching the truth", cutting corners underestimating material needs, not following through on promises, etc it can really impact the performance of the group.
Bottom line is if you choose to do business with Dominion Carpet, Alexandria, VA, be careful. There are a lot.... and I mean ALOT... of choices for flooring providers out there from which to choose. I simply really resent the misrepresentation of the product as being "what customers really want" as opposed to "well actually, the manufacturer sold so little or there were so many problems with it we quit making the stuff!" When you invite people into your house for extended periods, trust is everything and if the trust is broken, it doesn't matter how good were the prices, how great was the rest of the products, and how great the crew performed.
This was where most of my problems took place. There was rarely a senior person on site while the work was taking place only two men who didn't speak any English. At least they pretended not to speak any English because when I spoke Spanish to them which I could tell they were surprised about they just ignored most of what I said or me entirely. They began by not wanting to pull up the boards at all and just trying to place them in the L shaped gap that was left by the L shaped wall. When I said no, they ignored me, but then told me the existing boards would break. However my electrician was around and after I was done showing them the first time how to pull up the boards efficiently without breaking them I had to go attend to something else and he said they immediately when my back was turned just started haphazardly breaking them. So I got down on my hands and knees and for a couple of hours I pulled up the boards quite easily(I weigh 120 btw) without breaking any. They were very rude and clearly did not like to be told how anything should be done by a woman.
My other problem was with the staining and the lack of desire to apply the stain according to the directions. After the first part was done I had to go back over the room to deal with spots where they clearly had not applied enough stain. Unfortunately I could not be there when the other half was done because there was an emergency elsewhere, so this is where the continued problems occurred which I will try and include photos of. The discoloration between the 2 halves of the floor is quite noticeable also in an area where they didn't seem to level the floor properly it still looks very rough.
I had to call them and email them a number of times after completion without any response. I had to have my father call eventually and they listened to him and said they would fix it in the future when I wanted. I waited over a year because I was so upset about how I had been treated by the workmen and in the hopes that they would no longer work there when I finally had the repairs done. However when I did go back and ask for the original issues to be fixed they responded but refused to do anything about the issues.
would not give up until we were completely satisfied. Thank you Joey for your coordination of this installation.
We are so pleased with our flooring (compliments galore).
Joey walked us through they various options and prices and explained very patiently pricing structure based on various options, his team did an excellent job. Overall we are very happy with what we have paid for and the end result
If you are in market for new floors (hardwood, laminate or engineer hardwood) look no further, these guys are the best!!!
