Do to poor weather he arrived late, but called to let me know he was stuck in traffic. He talks a lot, but when he is working he gets right down to business. He is methodical and thorough. I appreciated his attention to detail. Our wiring does not match the standard electrical color code, but Bill explained how he always placed the "hot wire" on the top on every switch. He also aligned all the screws on the face plates so they were less likely to accumulate dust. Some of the dimmer switches he provided were the wrong style, and he did not order the right number of switches and ended up short. He left for about an hour or more to get more switches from Lowe's. He charged a rate of $75/hr. He also charged this rate for his travel time to Lowe's and his time trying to find the right parts in his truck.
Description of Work: Bill Cook is a sole proprieter. He performed a free estimate and provided the materials needed. He has a state contractor's license, but he said he would be retiring soon and taking small jobs. He replaced several old light switches, face plates and installed 4 outlets for our entertainment system. He hardwired the outlets to the electrical panel. I was going to have him install electrical for a ceiling fan and install the fan, but I wanted permits for any work that required permits. He charges $250 to obtain the permits, that with his estimate of several hours to install electrical and the fan, made the project cost prohibitive -- he confirmed it could cost $800 to install with the permit. He offered to install without the permit, but we declined. I showed him the style of switches I wanted emphasized I wanted the switches to match my existing switches. I offered to obtain the parts from Home Depot, but he said he would special order the parts and they would be more durable. The fee consisted of $235 for materials and $450 labor.
