Handyman Service
We engaged Rent-A-Man after finding his information in a local publication. Admittedly, we made a few key rookie mistakes like not checking out his previous work or references and not doing enough research to understand the basics on the work we required.
However, even as home improvement novices, it was clear that the quality of his work was substandard. Rent-a-Man estimated it would take him 21-22 hours to drywall the shower, repair drywall holes, replace shower plumbing, lay a 57 SF vinyl tile floor over the existing vinyl tiles, and retile a 55 SF shower with a simple tile design and new wall niche. After 2-1/2 days, he informed us he'd billed us for 21 hours and that it would take an additional 2 days or 16 hours to complete the tile work.
As we began to examine his work, we discovered the following questionable work: The newly installed shower plumbing was leaking in the wall and had been drywalled in. The tub spout pipe moved freely from side to side and the rest of the shower plumbing was not installed correctly as it moved as well. The drywall holes were patched amatuerishly - it appears they were just filled in with nearly an entire tub of joint compound. The newly laid, self-stick vinyl floor tiles are already popping up and have obvious gaps between tiles. The construction of the niche in the shower wall was also questionable, and included the addition of a 2x2 board that created a "window sill" look, which meant an uneven application of tile. We realized too late, that his advice to adhere self-stick vinyl floor tiles with a strong adhesive spray glue actually voids the manufacturer warranty.
We immediately terminated him, paying him just half of the billable time. After hiring a reputable handyman, complete with personal references and an examination of a complex shower he had tiled, we are now having to pay him to fix the above mistakes before we even get our tiles laid. Had we known when we terminated Rent-A-Man, that we would have to redo all of his work, except for the floor (which we will live with as-is), we not have paid him at all.
I cannot recommend the services of Rent-A-Man and in fact, question his skills as a handyman.
Our experience with Rent-A-Man has taught us a valuable lesson - check references and see previous work before you hire anyone. As we have to redo practically every room in our house, we count ourselves lucky that we learned this lesson on the first major project and that we only lost a small amount of money in the process.
