We went with another company that actually contacted us back and gave us a reasonable bid.

I was referred to Basements Etc. by my sister and her husband's brother. They had Bret do work for them in the past and liked his work. I am purchasing a home, it is a split level with an enclosed kitchen area. I called Bret to see if he could give me a quote on opening up a wall so the kitchen area would be part of the den area. I explained we were just purchasing this home and wanted to see the cost of opening up the wall. Without hesitation he said "It's a load bearing wall," which I was surprised by since we have been looking through dozens of split level homes and that wall was already opened up so I didn't think it would be too big of a deal to do it in our home. He explained how costly and basically ineffective it would be to try and open up that wall and ended by saying, "If you are buying this home with the sole intent of opening up that wall I would seriously reconsider your purchase." It left me feeling sad and defeated to say the least. Since then I have had two contractors come to our home and give us a bid. With a simple glance at the construction of the home they were able to tell me it was in fact NOT a load bearing wall and it would be relatively a simple project. I am so glad I didn't just take Bret's non-expert advice but got other opinions. I overall found him to be short and rather rude and that isn't a great first impression. Be careful if you are soliciting Bret's services, you may want a second opinion.
