The estimator, Matt, came on November 1st, 2013 to give me an estimate. We decided that they could be cut and haul all debris for $2580 (this was supposedly for a 10% discount he said). We set a date for the work to be done. I was hoping to get it done before snowfall; however, Diamond said they worked through every season and it wouldn't be any trouble at all if it was snowy.
Two scheduled times I took time off work to be here when they were to come, but they cancelled on me both times asking to reschedule. We rescheduled for a third time for 1/6/14 and 1/7/14. I was irritated by this time so Matt offered an $80 reduction to the bill for my trouble to let them reschedule yet again. He said he would write up the discount for me (but never did). I agreed to wait for the newly scheduled date and receive the discount.
Matt drove by my home again at some point and called me to explain that he had concerns about bringing the one tree next to the carport down to 8 ft and would like to change it to 12 ft. I said that would be okay.
On 1/3/14 at 12:28 PM Jazzy from Diamond called to confirm our appointment for 1/6 and 1/7/14 and said the bill will be "an even $2000" and asked if I would be paying cash or by check. I asked why the new amount of $2000 and she said they were giving me a winter discount. I thought, "Great!"
The cutting crew came as planned and worked through the day both days. They said they didn't feel comfortable cutting one of the trees down to 12ft because they were worried they would break the vinyl fence and/or my carport and asked if they could leave it where it was, which I estimate to be about 25 ft. I said that was okay, (though it doesn't look very good). The other tree was supposed to be at 8 ft but they left it at 12 ft and it doesn't look very nice either. I didn't complain about it but I did ask that they come and 1) pick up the bucket of oil they left and 2) remove the large limbs from on top of my flower beds and put them in the backyard as I had requested, and 3) fix the neighbors vinyl fence they broke. They came and took care of all that so I drove up to their office the same day to give them the check for $2000.
Two weeks go by and I receive a call from Diamond office personnel asking why the check for $2000. I explained the phone call from Jazzy and the gal thanked me and hung up. Two days pass and I get a call from Matt telling me I owe the other $500. I explained what Jazzy told me and he stated that they needed to get the $2500 as that is what was agreed on.
The next day Matt calls again and states that it was his mistake on the paperwork so that's why Jazzy called me but the price is $2500. I told him how irritated I was becoming with their company and he asked, "Oh? Why is that?" DUH. I stated that if he was going to go back to the original agreement on price then he needs to come back and take the trees down to what we agreed on as well. He remarked that I was doing a pretty good job of "trying to weasel out of it". I asked him what he would do but didn't get a response. He just kept repeating that they need the $2500 and he needs to have an answer from me to determine what his next step will be.
I feel that I don't owe an extra $500, or, if I do pay it they need to honor the original contract as well and bring the trees down to what was stated.
Unfortunately, he didn't put anything on the contract about killing the trees with poison, so I regret I didn't catch that error. I also regret that I didn't look into the fact that they are not insured (putting me at a HUGE risk!)
The problem I have now, besides the unsightly jagged and huge stumps left, is that they didn't girdle them all the way so I'm thinking this may be why they are growing tons of limbs! The trees are uprooting my driveway so I'm on Angie's List right now to find someone to do the job right.
When they actually came out to do the work, their foreman was really sick (he said with the flu). He actually threw up in my back yard, so I believe him on that one. While cutting down the larger tree, they dropped a branch on the cable line running to my house, which ripped off about a 12 foot section of molding to which the cable was affixed. The workers apologized for it, and said their company would see that it got fixed. This didn't bother me so much; I know mistakes happen and the tree was not an easy one to remove, hanging over my house, my neighbor's fence and garage, and the cable line.
The workers left later that day, after I had left for work, without completing the job. I had to call them (I think it was the next day) to let them know that the work hadn't been completed and notify them of the damage to my home. I would have appreciated them to call me and let me know what was going on and tell me when the work would be completed. Another guy came back after a day or two to finish the work, and it looks fine. I think they did a good job with the trimming and did a decent job cleaning up after themselves.
They called me after the work was complete to apologize for the damage and to let me know that they wanted to get it fixed, and offered me the option of having them hire a handyman to fix it, or let me hire my own handyman to fix it. They did mention that the foreman that was sent out for my job no longer worked there, but I got that feeling that he had been let go before my project began, and they hired him back for that. I could be wrong about that, but that was my understanding, and it is frustrating if that is really the case.
I would consider using these guys again, but I would probably get a few more quotes to see what other options are out there. The rescheduling multiple times was frustrating, as was finding out that I probably got a B-team foreman. The phone staff was very polite and professional, as were all the employees with the exception of the foreman.
stumps and cleaned up everything perfectly. You would have have never
know they were here. Everything was done efficiently and professionally
. . . and they did it all in one day! They also left us all the cut
logs and put them right where we asked them to for our wood stove. I
would highly recommend them.
The tree was sawed down into 3 or 4 sections, each section being lifted over the chain link fence, power lines and cars with the crane and into the middle of the street for final chain sawing into smaller pieces. The pieces were then loaded into dump trucks and hauled away. The entire process of cutting down the tree took 45 minutes. Then a long chain saw was used in cutting the remaining stump as close to the ground as possible. The entire process took about 2-1/2 hours. The crew did a good job in cleaning up the yard (raking), sidewalk and all the debris.
They provided us with confirmation of their insurance coverage and licensing. Their price was a little higher than some of the other companies I had called, but I was not confident that the other companies could do this mammoth job. Awesome job!
The problem is that they are in the tree cutting business and that is how they make money. If anything goes wrong, like a big muddy rodeo on your lawn, you will see them back around to fix the carnage when they get the chance because they are out cutting down more trees, thats how they make their money!
I had to rent a sod cutter to remove all the mangled sod and I prepped and leveled the rodeo site myself. Diamond agreed to pay for the replacement sod and to help me lay the sod. It cost me almost $200 to rent a sod cutter and a tiller to prep the site for the new sod.
3 canceled appointments later, and with 2 of my weekends gone doing prep, the supervisor showed up with a pallet of sod on a Saturday to fix the lawn. With half of the area of the damaged sod covered, the new sod was gone and I was told that, "the rest was on me" and that I cut out more than was necessary. I just moved on and bought $40 more worth of sod and finished the job myself.
These guys are great at removing trees. I would recommend them if you have a tree out in the middle of a one acre vacant lot than has nothing near it like a fence, a deck, a shed, sod, power lines or anything else that can get damaged. They will probably split the difference with you on the repair, give you the lower price and have anything that gets damaged repaired by the end of summer.
In the right situation, these guys are great. I did tip the hands as they worked very hard.
