We first contacted Chris Ashcraft at CFC Fences and Decks at the end of March. He came out, listened to what our thoughts were about what we wanted, and put together a bid. We accepted their bid and they put us on the schedule.
One of the nice things about working with Chris during the planning phase is that he was always willing to talk about different ideas that we had. For example, the initial bid was for simply laying Trex decking to the edge of the deck. After we went to their showroom in SLC, we noticed how nice it looked to have a wrap and border in a different colour and he quick added this to the plans.
Another instance of how easy it was to plan this project is that we changed our minds a couple of weeks before work was to start and decided to do metal framing and joists instead of wood. Chris was great to explain the pros and cons of this decision.
Pros-Super solid deck. It's a three level structure that rises 21 feet off of the ground so it was nice to have the option of steel to make it very beefy. Also, very low maintenance.
Con-Was expensive but not prohibitively so. It was well worth every dime to do the metal framing and I would do it again in a heartbeat. We are very pleased that we used the metal framing.
We scheduled May 5th but had to delay two weeks due to the City of Holladay requiring a structural drawing and permit issues. Also, Chris felt that with the size of the project and the use of metal framing, he wanted his crew that was most familiar with this type of construction to be on the job. He was great in explaining this and it made total sense to wait for that crew.
Speaking of the crew, Isa, Cory and Abraham were awesome! They worked very hard in some pretty brutal heat out there to get our decks up and done. All of the work was on the west side of the house so it got pretty toasty up there. They never complained and worked their butts off. It was very apparent that they cared about their work. They were courteous, funny and nearly felt like part of the family during the process. We felt very comfortable having them in and out of our home.
The entire project took about 6 weeks to compete. Considering the amount of labour it takes to work with steel instead of wood, we feel like they finished in a very reasonable amount of time. The deck is now complete and it looks absolutely amazing!
I would use them again in a heartbeat. So now, I'm going out side on my new deck to enjoy a beer and watch the sunset...
So this 2nd week they started building the frame or structure of the deck. They would show up late in the day and work on it for about two hours a day when they showed up, and they managed to show up about twice that second week. I called again and complained about it. The third week the guys from CFC/Utah Decks showed up and did some work. I thought, ok, maybe they were going to finish up by the next week, Wed or Thursday, and of course this wasn't the case. Getting the picture yet?
To make a long story short, it took CFC/Utah Decks two months to finish my deck, after they started working on it. Then I noticed that all the beams/posts were all splitting and cracking down the sides of the posts. I noticed that one of the supports posts/beams was leaning; it wasn't at all straight. I called the company several times and told them what was going on with the beams/posts and I heard but nothing for weeks about it from anyone. Then a couple of weeks ago I was taking a shower, and I heard someone running down my deck stairs. I looked out the window and saw the two guys who built the deck heading out of my backyard. So, another week goes by and the owner, Chris Ashcock emails me about the posts. He says that there is nothing wrong with them, and posts do split. I told him that I bring out an inspector to look at the beams/posts.
The inspector whom I had hired, a licensed general contractor, said that the splits were extreme, but within acceptable ranges. He did say though that this company, CFC/Decks should have used treated wood so the wood doesn't decay from water and moisture damage. The inspector also told me that Chris Ashcock should have known to use treated wood in the first place, and the wood that was used was simply bare wood. My posts are all taking in water, and I now have another costly problem to fix because of the poor quality, shotty work from CFC/Utah Decks.
I suggest, if you need to hire a company to build a new deck or even a new fence, to find another company. Believe me, you will have a lot more work to do after its done, in just repairs from this company's mistakes. My recommendation, Stonehenge Fence and Decks Company are one of the best in Salt Lake/Provo, also Allied Fence Company is great as well.
The work crew was efficient and professional. They built a beautiful fence that is straight and level. The new gate hangs properly and
latches properly (unlike the old one), and they cleaned up their mess.
Once the work started, it proceeded rapidly (one day for digging the posts and setting them, and one day for installing the rails and pickets). The installation was tricky, because the fence was going right along an area where utility lines were buried underground, so the post digging had to be done carefully. My only minor complaint is that I had asked the workers to stop and notify me if they hit any lines during the digging, and they hit (but did not break) a line for something, but did not tell me--it was only when I went to inspect the work myself that I discovered that they had dug up something. That is why they get a B for professionalism, instead of an A. At the end, they did succeed in avoiding damage to any buried lines, so all was well. When the rest of the fence went up, it came out quite nicely. The quality seems good, and I am pleased with the result. I would use them again and would recommend them to others.
We added a colonnade, looking from the gate the top of the colonnade waves and is not level at all.
Driving by the fence looks good up close is a different story. We would love to have them remedy the problems to date we've not had any luck
We need to have another 70' replace - will be looking for another company to do the work.
CFC fencing project manager seemed fairly responsive to my complaints however we continue to have problems with the workmanship. I've asked for the sales person to come and look at the fence to see what we are dealing with, have not even had an email or phone call from him.
This is an update to my previous review. Late Oct. 2012 I received a call from CFC fencing requesting to review the problems explained in the above paragraphs. A manager arrived at the date and time scheduled, explained how they valued us as a customer and that they wanted to resolve the problems we were having. We did a walk through and he took pictures and wrote down the issues. We received a call within a day or two to schedule the repairs. Again they came out as scheduled. The gentleman who made the repairs was very through and did a great job in making the repairs. We appreciate them coming out and resolving the issues. We wish they would have come out earlier.
