Work went well, but ran into some delays.
"[Member name removed], We are sorry the bid didn't go as you planned. I believe it was over 2 years ago that we came out so I am having a hard time remembering the details of our visit. Sometimes decks can get expensive (Especially when you have a lot of square footage). I often ask our customers for feedback on the project when we are finished. We usually start with comparisons to other bids they obtained prior to choosing us. We are not always the cheapest (Cheapest is not our goal, best value is) but we are usually quite competitive in price. I am sorry we came across as "cocky" to you. We want to sound like experts (Because we are) but our goal is to be as professional as possible."
"Thanks [member name removed], we appreciate the job and it was great working with you."
The team arrived around 9 or 10 a.m. in the mornings and left by 3:30 or 4:30 p.m. in the afternoon for 4 days. They took away all the demolished pieces. They dug holes for new posts to anchor and framed things up and worked continuously the four days. It looks nice and shows well. We salvaged most of the posts and railings and did not need to replace these so saved some money but added cement step footings.
"Thanks [member name removed] for the job and we are happy that you are happy with it."
If there was any issue at all with the entire process, the estimated start date did slip a couple time for a total of about 6 weeks. For me, this was not a problem, and it should be noted that no deposit was required. Also, Red Deer has an owner on all jobs, which no doubt makes scheduling a little harder. This seemed worth the wait for me instead of getting a crew sent out the next day from a larger company.
The actual project went very smoothly, having Tim on site made it easy to coordinate some minor changes and pick options as we went. No complaints whatsoever with parking, keeping a clean worksite, making sure the deck was built as desired, etc. My short punch list at the end of the project was taken care of promptly, and the final bill was exactly as discussed, no surprises.
Bottom line, it was worth the wait. We are extremely happy with our new deck.
Needless to say, we were stuck in a home that was too small, and required more work than we had originally planned. When the bathroom tub faucet began leaking, we decided to update the whole room. I called around for bids, including the box store options (usually $15k to update the bathroom). Maybe those big prices and complete updates are worth it...but not in this home and not with my budget. I remembered having met the owner of Red Deer Construction prior and called for a bid. The owner came on site and viewed the room with me. We discussed my original plans, he made some practical suggestions, and we settled on removing the tub surround, updating the shower plumbing and replacing the old white surround with a custom tile job...all for about $1000. His crew finished the work while I was out of town for the weekend and cleaned up everything. It was nice to come home to a new bathroom.
In 2011 I was lucky enough to purchase some adjacent property, subdivide my lot, and build a new home. I had planned on acting as the general contractor and making all the calls (and doing a lot of the work myself). In retrospect I wish I had contracted the whole job to Red Deer Construction. I tried to use contractor friends for a number of jobs, but I found I did not enjoy asking friends to accept less money to match competitive bids, and liked it even less when the work they provided was substandard or I had to call them more than once to finish the job they had accepted to do. I also found that I had no time to work on the home as I had planned. I used Red Deer for enough jobs on the new home that I found their bids to be consistently competitive, and they always did outstanding work. When you get to know the owners of the company like I did with this project, you start to see why. It is probably too simple (but refreshing when you never know what you might get) they listen to the homeowner, make practical suggestions, then work to complete the agreed vision.
It's nice to have one company that I can call on for any bid, and to know that they will either provide the work or a valued (quality) referral. I would recommend Red Deer Construction for any home project, new or renovations.
So I the four things that made it a positive experience with Red Deer were:
1) Good communication and reasonable pricing/honest
2) Quick responsiveness
3) Organization and clean-up control
4) Quality
Overall, they are likable, nice guys who have pride in what they do. I highly recommend them and plan on using them in the future.
When it was time to install, Red Deer brought some of the wrong style windows. We made some changes in our plan to accommodate. It was frustrating, but they gave us a discount on them so we rolled with it.
They said we could apply for incentives from the gas and power companies. Then, I was looking over the Millgard Window information today to apply for these incentives from the power and gas companies, and noticed that these windows are not Energy Star rated in Utah, and they do not meet the specifications to qualify for any incentives. This is just blatant abuse of a client and unforgivable in my opinion. You don't install windows for energy efficiency that aren't considered energy efficient for the geographic location they are being installed. The window receipts say "Energy Star" on them, and then in the fine print, it says "US Climate Zones, South Central and Southern". We're in Utah which is considered the Northern region.
We were a little disappointed that the project took longer than planned and was started later than we had expected. Sometimes we weren't sure of their schedule and when they would be coming to work on it, so it would have been helpful to have better communication.
Overall, we are pleased with the final product and found that Red Deer was pleasant to work with.
"We appreciate the feed back and are pleased you are happy with your deck."
