PHILLIPS TURF FARM

This company is not the easiest to get in touch with. Usually when we called no one would answer and you had to leave a message or call multiple times before you could get in contact with someone. Their prices for the sod were good. They were in line with other turf farms I looked at. We ordered 4000 sq ft of sod the week previous to when we had it delivered. One of the issues I had was that we wanted it earlier in the day when it was cooler, but they couldn't deliver it until late afternoon. That makes it kind of difficult to lay sod since it will dry out in the hot weather and you only have a few hours until it starts getting dark. They were supposed to deliver the sod around 3pm, but didn't show up until about 4pm. Being about 1 hour late wasn't a huge deal. One of my issues with them not delivering until late afternoon was that I didn't get done laying sod until after midnight. When the sod arrived the first thing the person delivering it said was, "I tried to hose the sod down before we left, but some of it is pretty dry." Boy was it ever! There was a lot of sod that was in great condition, but when we were done laying the sod we had close to 1 1/2 pallets left over that were just completely dried and dead. The dry sod made it harder to lay since it was tearing when we'd pick it up. Even the pieces that weren't dead were still pretty dry and had issues with them not tearing. Don't get me wrong, we had plenty of sod that was good enough to do the yard, but there was plenty that was just horrible. The sod has been in place for about 3 weeks now and it looks pretty good. However, it seems that there was quite a bit of weed in the sod as I have a significant amount of crabgrass coming up in my yard. I'm just surprised the sod wasn't treated with anything to avoid this. I'm sure with some treating I'll eventually get rid of it all. I marked them a "D" in responsiveness because of their lack of follow up when we left messages for them. One of the annoyances with experience is that you are charged $5.00 for each pallet and you have to return them back to their location in order to get your deposit back. For about the week after our sod was delivered we called to find out the procedure for returning them. We thought that they returned to pick them up, but they didn't. We left messages asking what to do, but there was no return phone call. Eventually my wife got ahold of someone and we found out that we were to return them to their location in West Jordan and we could just drop them off anytime. We eventually got them dropped off and taken care of. They don't seem to do a good job with answering their phones or returning messages. We had the same issue when originally trying to call them to order sod. Overall I would not recommend this company for sod. Their prices are fair and reasonable. However, their sod was pretty dry and in bad condition when it arrived. After it is established it will look pretty good, but you'll have some issues with weeds sprouting up. If you need to contact them quickly don't hold your breath as it takes a while to get a hold of anyone and if you do leave a message keep calling them back.
