I really liked that Kerstin came right to our home to show us color options and product samples. It's so nice to be able to see the shades and fabric actually up against your windows instead of trying to imagine them while in a showroom. I also liked that there was no pressure to buy. Even though we ended up going with the Hunter Douglas shades that we had originally picked out, Kerstin was happy to help us explore some more budget friendly alternatives.
The shades that we ordered were installed within a couple of weeks (before we moved in) by their installer who they claimed was a Hunter Douglas master certified installer. I don't know exactly what that means, but they did a great job and everything looks beautiful :)
Aspen Blinds was friendly, responsive, had good prices and did a great job installing our blinds. I have already recommended them to friends (who had similarly positive experiences).
In the case of this unit, the wife arrived on 17 August at the promised time to measure windows and provide estimates. Once we had selected the blind model, size, and color, the quote was completed. I was offered a small discount if I paid for the job in full in advance. I responded that I would only do so on the basis of a guaranteed installation date. We agreed the installation would be completed by 6 September, and on that basis I wrote a check for the installation. The install date was important as we were preparing to rent the house to tenants and passed along the promised installation date to the tenant in order to give them some comfort that the installation would be handled in a professional manner.
The promised installation date came and went, with numerous calls to the company going unreturned. Of course, the tenants began to complain to us as the installation was not performed as had been promised by Aspen Blinds. Finally, three days later, after perhaps a dozen calls and several e-mails and unfortunately having to threaten to file a report with the better business bureau, the husband responded with a bizarre five page e-mail, with a strange set of excuses (hiking in the mountains with no phone signal, manufacturer held the order, wife was not able to run the company without the husband and on and on). To his credit, he apologized profusely and reported that, due to the multiple errors in communication and inaction on their part - unbelievably - our order had not even shipped yet (it was now three days after the promised installation date). Strangely, the reply also claimed that Aspen Blinds was a well run installer and suggested that several customers rave about their work. However, Aspen offered no compensation for the ongoing delay that they had admitted was their fault ... other than to suggest that if we were to do business in the future, they would provide a $100 discount (not likely!).
This situation continued for nearly a month in a keystone cops-like manner, with Aspen performing some of the work, but never fully completing it because there were problems with the fabrication of the valences--with no explanation other than to blame the factory. Yet again, there were no explanations forthcoming until after we had complained. Neither the husband nor the wife could understand why we were not delighted with their service. The occasional e-mail claiming a and quot;usuallyand quot; high level of customer service only added insult to injury ... and ultimately turned into a few laughs because of the obvious incompetence in running a customer oriented business.
In the end, the work that was promised by 6 September was finally completed over a month late, on 7 October. The tenants were, of course, unhappy with the timing, the property manager was unhappy, and so were we. After a callback to install a couple of missing parts, the work was finally done to an acceptable level of quality.
We hold ourselves and others to high standards, but we are reasonable people and accept that delays sometimes happen despite the best of intentions. Had Aspen Blinds communicated with us proactively, had they offered modest compensation, say a 10-20% refund as a token of good faith, we would probably still be doing business with them. However, they instead chose to keep us in the dark. In discussing the problem with others in the industry here locally, it became apparent that, because the shop is so small, it does not have any influence or priority with the manufacturers and therefore is unable to request a and quot;rushand quot; order to correct problems with sizing, fabrication, etc. I wish I had known that at the time I placed the order!
For all of the reasons cited above, unfortunately I cannot in good conscience recommend Aspen Blinds be considered for any size of project or assignment--no matter how favorable the claims or pricing might be. In my experience, they are simply unable to deliver as they promise.
