Auto Service
I showed up around 11am and asked if they had time for an oil change. I had no appointment but they saw me right away. They asked what kind of oil I typically used, and mentioned the last service I had was a full synthetic oil change. I mentioned I remembered it being a bit more expensive but told them I thought it was "worth it". They agreed it would be a few bucks more and took my keys and got right after it.
The service was prompt and they were done in about 20 minutes. When ringing me up, I did a double take at the price. $81.15 was the cost of the oil change. Shocked, I asked how much they paid for synthetic oil (thinking maybe it was much more expensive then where I got my vehicle serviced last - which was in Boston). They said about $6 a quart.
Confused, I paid and wandered off.
When I collected myself, I looked up the price of the materials for this job.
- 5 quarts of synthetic oil: about $40
- 1 oil filter: $5-$10
- Bexell's markup: $30-$35
For a 20 minute job, that seems a bit ridiculous. After consulting some locals, they laughed and admitted oil changes should not cost $80+, and that oil prices are not in fact, double to what they are in Boston.
While their service was quick and the mechanics working we friendly enough, I won't be doing business with Bexell again.
(Please note - Bexell Quick Lube and Bexell Auto Sales, while in the same parking lot and right next door to each other, are NOT the same business)
