When the week came the concrete contractor had the ground at level and I needed Best Vinyl to install a sleeve in the ground that would later be in the concrete and hold a post for the double gate. Their crews were busy and one was on vacation so they could not come. I could not put off a 40 yard concrete pour so I convinced the salesman to drop off the sleeve and I dug the hole by hand and installed myself (still cost $100 for this metal tube).
Two more weeks go buy and the post team set an appointment for Thursday, I call off work and wait for them. At 400 they call, something came up. The next day they show up and I am told that they are not responsible for anything they hit underground. "But don't worry it is all hand dug" I am then also told they will not remove from property the dirt taken for the posts. Of course if I wanted to give the guy extra money he will take care of it. I leave and when I come back a large pile of dirt is sitting on my drive way along with several twisted up sections of sprinkler pipe. Pipe was obviously hit with an auger. Time it took to shovel all the dirt into my truck and take it to the dump was several hours. $27 dollar dump fee and $20 to wash the seagull crap off my truck after. Then another 5 hours to fix all the sprinkler pipe dug up.
I called the salesman. He said it was standard practice to leave the dirt. According to him all fence companies do that, I did not check but I cannot imagine that is true. My last fence did not come with a pile of dirt in my driveway. After I complained the salesman knocked $30 off the bill. Not worth it.
A week after the posts were installed the team that puts the fence and gate parts together came. The fence actually looks pretty nice and the gates work perfectly. The only problem is on one section they cut the slats too low and there is a gap between the top rail and the slats about a finger width and about 3' long. I sent pictures to the salesman and called him. He said someone will be right out to fix it. That was June 29th. As of July 17th it is not fixed and I have not heard from them. The bill came in the mail requiring my prompt attention. Fence is paid for and still not fixed.
tldr; company was unprofessional. Treated me like they were doing me a favor. Could not keep an appointment and, so far, have not fixed their mistakes. If I knew how to attach pictures I would. The fence will be nice when it is fixed, sturdy and looks good. I just don't like how I was treated. I intentionally did not go with the low bid to avoid just this kind of thing. You should know that removing the dirt will cost you extra money and 100' of fence was a pick-up full of dirt. If you don't mind this kind of treatment at least save money and go with a lower priced company.
Greg Davis, was our point of contact. Greg, was very professional and always followed up as we were deciding on our decision. Once we contacted BV for the work 0n 8/14/14, the project was to begin the week of 9/21-9/28. I thought that was a bit to long, however, the job was completed. I was satisfied.
They were quite accommodating in dealing with the various requirements of each of the neighbors and split the billing so we didn't have to worry about it.
I signed the agreement with Best Vinyl in May 6, 2013. The price was competitive and the quality of the fence was good. What won the deal was that, if I used their recommended landscaper, they would act as the contractor for the entire job freeing me from the responsibilities. The landscaper was described as having professional concrete pourers, and seemed to be competent in the area of landscaping. Work was due to be completed by July 4th. Work was not completed until October 21st.
Fence and patio removal when quickly. Installation of the new fence depended on getting the mow strip and patio poured, and the yard leveled. Unfortunately, that had many delays, miscommunications, and hard feelings.
Connecting with the landscaper to make sure we were on the page about the work was difficult - he seemed very busy and it was hard to schedule time. When we did meet, I found that the original statement of work had not been detailed enough to describe what I wanted and the landscaper wanted to charge extra telling me that he would lose money on the deal otherwise. Further, details that were on my original signed estimate and that I spoken about with the Best Vinyl salesman did not seem to have been communicated with the landscaper (or had been forgotten). Even worse, the people brought in to pour the concrete did not have the experience that the salesman had indicated.
The salesman mediated between me and the landscaper, but did not act as a contractor. I was present for every job and had to work with both Best Vinyl and the landscaper to get the final job completed. Interactions with the landscaper were heated and disagreements had to be escalated to the Best Vinyl salesman. It made for a very unpleasant experience. So much for Best Vinyl working on my behalf to make the job painless.
Aside from the difficulties I had with the landscaper, the installation of the new fence was quick and efficient. I was disappointed that the installers didn't clean the mud splatters off fence when they were finished, didn't pick up their soda cups out of my yard, and didn't pick up the small vinyl shreds littering my yard. After I contacted my salesman, they came back out and addressed the issues promptly.
I would use Best Vinyl again, but would make my own arrangements for patio, mow strip, and landscaping work. And, I would ensure that every detail of my requirements was written in the final work agreement.
