We initially met with David Haynes regarding this project in 2013. We bought stock plans, which were so basic they were little more than just a concept. David took those plans, discussed our needs and wants and turned them into a stunning home.
Our initial meeting was several hours long. He listened to our thoughts, and had a lot of great suggestions. David worked up a detailed quote, working with the Title Company at closing, and the bank throughout the whole process.
David is a builder of a rare breed. He is proud of his work, and takes his time. If something is not quite right, he will stop and think it through - sometimes researching alternatives before finishing the task. One of the things we really like is that he makes sure everything is straight and plumb.
He used the best wood he could get for the framing. It is an extremely solid structure. Nothing like the cheap houses being mass produced today.
The bathroom tiles we chose have a flowing kind-of look. When David tiled the bathroom and hall, he laid out the tiles to plan how they would look as a whole. The shower wall almost looks like a natural stone formation weathered by rain. A really neat effect.
When it was time to choose a cabinet stain, David and I went to Sherwin Williams and took granite and hardwood floor samples with us. We were there for over an hour while he had the employee gradually add different shades to the stain to get a color that blends perfectly with both the floors and counters.
Although we did need to meet with some of the subs during the process, David handled the bulk of the negotiations, including setting their contract prices, scheduling their work, and obtaining the lien releases. All we had to do was meet with a few of them, like the cabinet builder to choose wood type and cabinet design, and the electrician to choose lighting color and switch types.
David is not the cheapest choice. But he is the best quality choice we have found. He built us a structure that will last.
The reason we wanted a garage apartment was because we need to do some major renovations to our main home. Now we have a wonderful place to stay when we do the main remodel. We will definitely be contacting David to bid on our next job.

David is a craftsman at his work and he did everything with great care and painstaking detail. He helped us decide what we wanted done -- as in what would be worth our money and what not. He worked alone in our house while we were out at work, very kindly putting up with our dog who wanted to be his pal. He was careful with his equipment on our tile floors, the carpet in our bedroom and the patio. We asked him to lay a brick pattern -- each line of tile offset form the next one -- which he did beautifully. He suggested tile sizes and trim options when we didn't know what we wanted, and if he disagreed with our choices (i.e. where to put the horizontal line of accent tiles) he explained why (so it would flow through the niche) and his arguments made sense. The only reason I marked his prices as "Good" rather than "Excellent" is because his cost was not inexpensive; but if you want craftsmanship on your remodeling and not just a quick fix, you will get what you pay for with David.

David was very quick to respond. He came out right away to give me a quote and was able to start the job the next day! He was very professional and accurately described the work that the project entailed. David did a great job, for a great price! I would definitely recommend him.

David is very thorough. He did most of the work by himself, insuring that in each area the source of any water damage was found and repaired for a solid, leak proof result. His trim work looks beautiful. He is a perfectionist, so it took quite a while, but we are very pleased with the results.
