Sidewalks , Brick & Block Landscape &Retaining Walls David appeared to be a nice guy that was down on his luck. This probably contributed to his overstatement of his qualifications. I have a large house to prepare for listing in a couple of months and I needed help getting it ready. David's ad fit everything that I needed. After 4 hours of work, David asked for $100. I understood that if someone had not been working for a while, he may need it, however, I only had $45 in my wallet at the time. I gave it to him. This became a pattern however, he asked for more money the next day. It wasn't so much that he asked for money, but it was the manner in which he did it that concerned me. He asked my wife for it when she got home. She told him that I handle the finances. He then called me, but I was in a work meeting. He then sent a text asking for money. I told him "Tomorrow." He then begged for $20 so that he could give it to his daughter for school. This was a red flag for me. From experience, this indicated to me that he was using drugs. After walking through the project with David and seeing him get to work, it appeared as though the only thing he was interested in doing was drywall work. He started to tile an area the first day, but he only laid the tile that he didn't have to cut. The mortar was laid so thick that it oozed up between the joints and he let it dry that way. His drywall work was good and I believe that is his trade. I became worried about his other skills and I didn't have time to waste with someone who, while good intentioned, wasn't really qualified to do the job. After three days of work, he should have been further along in the process. At the end of the week, I offered him a fair price for the work performed and told him that it wasn't working out. He asked what he could do different to keep the business and I told him that I just needed someone that worked faster, completed the tasks they start in a timely manner, and I was concerned about the skillset involved. I didn't mention the professionalism aspect of asking for money in a rude manner. After I paid David, he called me about 1 hour later and told me that nobody would cash my check; not even Wal-Mart, and that he needed cash or money order. I told him that I didn't have time to get that to him, and he became desperate in his language. Again, in the back of my mind, I'm thinking he needs a fix. After a conversation that was going nowhere, I had to hang up on him. He then proceeded to my home where my wife was home alone. She was genuinely afraid of him at this point and was talking to him through the glass. He refused to leave without cash and threatened to put a lien against the house. I had to call the police.
