We don’t recommend hiring a stucco pro to apply this feature when the temperatures are below freezing, so it’s best to avoid applying stucco siding to your home during the winter. If you're comparing stucco versus vinyl siding based on cost alone, vinyl siding would be the winner there. In terms of longevity, on the other hand, stucco lasts for around 50 years, 10 to 30 years longer than vinyl siding, making it a better long-term investment.

Stucco is considered a type of cladding because it includes a built-in ventilation layer, a weatherproof membrane beneath that, and, often, a layer of insulation to improve building efficiency. The multiple layers of stucco—the scratch coat, the brown coat, and the finish coat—also create a more complex building membrane, so it’s more accurate to call it cladding. However, homeowners and contractors alike refer to stucco as siding.
