My husband and I were enclosing the garage area of our home.  In the past we have done nearly all of our own construction work.  To finish the outside wall, a hot tub had to be moved so that we would have access to the wall and to repair tile placed on the concrete portion of the deck.  We hired help to move the hot tub and it was placed right next to where it originally was on the outer part of our deck.  (Call a hot tub company and it costs $600 to move it one way and $600 back.)  We intended for it to stay on the outer deck for about a week.  That outer part of our deck is about 7 feet from the lake.  What we didn’t know was that the deck was severely compromised by Hurricane Ike and was poorly built originally.   When our deck boards started bowing and sinking underneath the hot tub, I panicked—I had visions of the hot tub nestling itself into the lakebed, having to pay a barge to come rescue the pieces and pay for damage to the Homeowners’ Association bulkhead and boardwalk on which the tub had just bounced.   I called two different places, set up times and waited for help which resulted in an exasperating bunch of “I’m sorry(s).”  During those two weeks my deck looked more and more like a sway backed horse.  It creaked and looked like it was smiling at me.  Desperate, I called Scot at Align Construction and Remodeling (newly listed on Angie’s List).  He came out that day—no really—that day—and took a look.  I was so freaked out at that point that I just wanted him to shore the deck up so the tub wouldn’t ungracefully dive into the lake before he could get back to repair it.  He offered to come back the next day with a bid.  If I accepted, his team would come to move the tub back to its original place and repair the deck the next day and finish by replacing the tile.  He assured me the deck would hold another day.  He did exactly as promised.  Of course there is always more to the story.  In taking up the deck boards that next day he found, and I have photos, where the deck was poorly built.  The base was improperly fastened to the foundation and nails seemed haphazardly applied in odd directions.  Would the way the deck was built have worked in an area that was not partially suspended and not subjected to hurricane force wind and water?  Perhaps.  But it is important to know to plan for what the home may endure.  Not all builders consider that future or know to do so.  Scot is a construction manager that is used to building for “possibilies” in a flood area and plans for it.  Incidentally, my new deck will probably remain undamaged if Hurricane Horrible destroys my home.   Again, there is more to the story.  Hurricane Ike’s surge undercut the corner of the foundation of our home and broke off a corner piece as it sucked dirt out from under the foundation and into the lake.  None of this could be seen because of the decking that surrounded the house.  (We bought before Hurricane Ike and had not yet taken possession.  And no, the inspector didn’t crawl under the deck where skirting boards had been replaced at the closing inspection.  Who would have guessed?)  To reduce the possibility of further erosion, Scot built a retaining wall and replaced packed dirt under the foundation.     Also worth mentioning is that Scot underestimated the amount of work it would take to remove and replace the old tile on the concrete foundation and steps part of the deck—about 320 square feet.  Originally it was though it would take about 2 days.  It took 4 days.  It took a day to just remove the old tile.  Not unreasonable; probably just annoying.  The real test was the fact that not only was the foundation sloped, it was sloped two ways and it was poured so that there were 1.5 inch differences in depth in odd places.  The walls (my husband and I found this to be maddening when we were building) of the house are not square—really not square.  It may be the nature of a beast built on piers.  Scott did not charge us extra as some builders may have tried, but I think maybe his team may have said some unkind things about the original builders of the home to him.   Scot is more than attentive.  He is personable, honest and caring.  He tells you how he sees your job’s scope and progress and offers suggestions but you are free to choose to do things your way.  He helps you plan for contingencies.  He added safety features.  He knows, and this is really important, that Homeowners Associations rule.  He will contact them before he starts building if you don’t wish to do so and make sure that you won’t have to bear the expense of tearing down the structure after it is built.  (Each piece of work appears to be a work of art to Scot and his team and they are partial to not having it torn down.)  Scot has lived in the area for most of his adult life.  He knows the procedures and local officials for permitting.   Because of the strength and beauty of construction that Scot and his team did on my deck, other neighbors have visited and are highly impressed and have already or intend to hire him for their future jobs.  Take a look at Align Construction’s website but remember it only tells part of a story.  It does not tell you of Scot’s past work with Houston homebuilders—he has a long history in construction.  Ask him.  One other note:  Scot’s team has been with him for about 7 years if I remember correctly.  They interact like family.  They were happy and polite to one another and to me.  They work hard from about 8am till 6pm Monday through Saturday and they clean up everything every day.  Looking from the outside I see the hallmark of excellent management.
