The following is the reason I am not giving Mike Staas Services a high rating:
1. The job (the replacement of a water line from the street to the house through a driveway) was bid at $2500.00. This seemed to be an awfully high amount, but it was explained to me that the reason for the high cost was because of the re-paving of the portion of driveway that had to be cut for new pipe. The driveway is aged asphalt. Project began on March 5th.
2. Cutting the trench for the new pipe with a ditch-witch machine was fairly uneventful. Laying the pipe and having it inspected by the city was also uneventful.
3. In finishing the job, instead using ‘hot’ asphalt, Mike Staas Services used off-the-shelf “Quikcrete” bagged asphalt, otherwise known as ‘cold’ asphalt that can be purchased at a local home improvement store. After three weeks the asphalt was still soft. This process contradicted the reasoning behind the high bid seeing that it costs less than $12.00 a bag.
4. After questioning the use of the asphalt, Mike Staas’ Management argued that the product is ‘normally’ used for this application. I made the observation that the asphalt was not the same type as the original, that the aggregate seemed to not be present and that the asphalt was poor quality. Mike Staas’ Manager took pictures of other ‘professional’ laid asphalt and sent them to me with the point that new asphalt would not look the same as the old. My point however was that the new asphalt was not appropriate for its use. I fully understood that the color of the asphalt would be different.
5. Mike Staas’ Manager and I met at my home on March 27th to discuss the issue. His observation was the same as mine,
that the asphalt was still soft. Still, he maintained that the material is normally used for this kind of job. He said that he would send an asphalt company to remove the newly laid ‘cold’ asphalt and lay down some new ‘hot’ asphalt, which is what I expected in the first place for $2500.00.
6. On April 18th, 6 weeks after the job began, an asphalt company showed up at my door at 8am to finally fix the driveway.
I received no notification prior. The asphalt company personnel on site acknowledged that the asphalt used for my driveway was not appropriate. They also said that they have done many jobs for Mike Staas Services and wondered why the product was used. The asphalt they put down that day was ‘hot’ asphalt and was dry within a couple of hours.
I want to note that the pipe and valves that were laid down were done very well. They fully met my expectations. The plumbers who laid the pipe were professional and were attentive to ensuring that no water leaks remained. For this I feel Mike Staas Services was completely qualified. However, I am not sure they had the experience and expertise to cut an asphalt driveway and replace it. Because of my experience I cannot recommend that others hire them for the same type of project. Perhaps however, they have learned from this and the next customer won’t have wait 6 weeks for their issue to be fixed.
Finally, what I didn’t expect is that after everything was done, I called to pay the last half of my bill using my credit card.
I felt that it would be both convenient to them and to me. I was told that because it was a bid job, that they would have to charge me 3% of the final bill to use my card. The reasoning – because on a bid the company does not take into account credit card charges when bidding. I declined giving them an extra $38.00 and will send a check.

We had to wait for the coils to thaw, which was fine. The service tech made several snide comments about our Trane A/C unit. We just bought our house a year and half ago, so we did not pick this brand, but that should not have been an issue for the tech. We had used Staas before and really liked them-too bad the same professional was no longer with them! The tech returned, filled the freon, but never recognized the issue with the indoor unit. The cooling lasted only until Saturday, August 4. On Sunday, we were forced to call for help- the house was becoming unbearably hot. We were told it would cost us double time, even though we had paid for service that was poorly done. The service technician was less than enthusiastic about helping us. The person who answered the phone on Sunday was very kind and promptly had our call returned. All in all, Staas seemed to not care at all that they lost our business.

They were recommended to me as a company that had the expertise and equipment to do the job. I had used them on a previous job and knew they did good work.
The job was pretty involved, required digging a new line out the side of my house and making a hole in the slab to close off the old line.
They had the cameras, and equipment to get the job done, plus men who knew what needed to be done.
It was expensive, but I think they did a good job.
There may be other plumbers that could have handled the job and maybe cheaper, but my previous experience with them made me comfortable having them do it.

Mike Staas is our favourite. They do the job right. They are very conscious about getting in and getting out because of how much it costs. Mike Staas wouldn't charge for the full hour and I thought it was fair.

The company, Mike Staas, had previous come to repair the leak in the clothes washer hot water thing but the next time I used it it leaked again. When the kitchen sink stopped up I called them again and another worker fixes both problems.

It was in two separate jobs. The dishwasher and bathroom faucet are great. The shower was not fixed correctly and completely stopped working in just 3 months. When I called about the shower situation the lady I spoke with was very rude and assured me it was not their fault and I would be charged to come and fix it. I had another plumbing company take a look at it and he wouldn't speak badly of them but in a round about way said the handles weren't put on properly. The man who installed the dishwasher and bathroom faucet took many smoke breaks and I feel it shouldn't of taken as long as it did and feel that he was just trying to stretch that third hour out to get paid for so I wouldn't complain about 20 minutes.
