I have a log home that I love. When I bought it 20 years ago, I hired Bobby Springer of Real Pine Log Homes to do some rather major repairs found at inspection. They did a superb job then - the repairs have withstood the test of time. I am getting ready to sell my home, and had hired a structural engineer to check out the house since I had several doors that started to stick, a broken pipe, etc. He told me that the foundation was fine, but there was a framing issue that could use some reinforcement. I called several A-rated carpenters and home builders listed on Angies List, but when I described that I had a log home, it was not something any of them felt
comfortable working on. I knew that Bobby had retired from big jobs like mine, but I called him and asked if he could recommend someone who could handle what I needed done. Bobby told me that Marcos de la Cruz, the owner of Cedar Hills Custom Homes, was one of the men who worked with Bobby back on the original repair. I called Marcos and he didn't blink an eye when I described what I
needed. He showed up the next day to give me a bid, and had it back to me in a day. We negotiated a little, and fortunately for me, he was not busy that week. He started the next day! The first thing he and his excellent crew (Billy and Jason) did was bring the deck up to code. The engineer had noted that there were no hangers attaching the joists to the fascia, that gaps had formed, and recommended hangers be added. Marcos straightened the joists so that the gaps were all closed, and attached the hangers at both ends. After they finished, my deck felt like a brand new deck ? very solid. They also replaced 2 broken deck boards. The engineer had recommended putting in a LVL beam (very strong, man-made laminate beam) along half the length of the house where the original beam was starting to turn at one end, and using lag screws to sister the two together to give reinforcement to the beam. They had to jack up the house about a half an inch to slip the beam under. In addition, the engineer recommended to brace the center beam to prevent it from rolling ? the crew braced the beam to every single floor joist. This work took 3 days to complete. On the last (4th) day, they rehung 3 doors and added an attic access. These guys showed up on time every day, cleaned up at the end of each day, finished a day early (!), charged reasonable rates, and were just a pleasure to work with ? both this time, and 20 years ago. I highly recommend these guys for any type of carpentry, building, additions, decks, and especially log homes that you may have! The more challenging, the better!
