While in the process of being approved for a foster / adoption, the city Fire Marshal advised me prior to his inspection that they now required a fire extinguisher in the house that had a certification tag on it that was up to date.  Even a brand new extinguisher fresh from the store would still have to be inspected and certified before being acceptable.  I called Alonzo Fire today and they were at my house by mid afternoon to do the inspection.  They are a mobile service that comes to you for a minimal trip charge, but I am sure you may also take any extinguisher to their office, which is now located in Converse, TX.  The technicians were knowledgeable and efficient and even inspected and certified an second older extinguisher that I had for no additional charge.  Since the foster / adoption process cannot move forward with the Fire Safety Inspection, this is a necessary evil that must be done.  If you are in this position and have an older fire extinguisher at your home, just have it inspected and certified and save the money of buying a new one.  You have to get it inspected anyway, new or old, so just use the old one if it is in good shape and undischarged.
