Hired WDL to rebuild our garage on a fixed price contract. Project took over one year to complete after first payment was made. We were told the project was complete and paid WDL the final amount only to find out from their electrical subcontractor that the final electrical inspection wasn’t complete and they had not been paid by WDL. We also found out from the City that the construction permits had expired and all permit requirements were not completed yet. Contacted WDL and they wanted us to pay for additional permits that were covered under the contract which had been paid in full. We also received a notice of intent to file a lien due to non-payment by WDL. At this point WDL had abandoned the project, has not completed all contracted work, has not paid their subs and ceased communication.

I thought they were great! They answered all my questions, they made sure the design was what I wanted. They were very easy to work with. I heartly recomend them. My garage now comliments my 100 year old house, thanks to WDL.

We hired WDL to build a garage apartment on our property in the city of Houston, and the process was a debacle from the start. We understand that the permitting process can be cumbersome and difficult but it took over 2 months for WDL to finally obtain the permit for our build, and the various reasons for failing departmental review were what I would consider unacceptable (failing to include smoke detectors in plans, no soils report, insufficient engineering details, etc.) The "demo crew" that showed up to our house was two old dudes, a sawzall, and a ladder, and they proceeded to strip all scrap-able material from the structure and leave. They are the classic bad contractor--charge the owner a large lump sum price and then use cheap, low quality sub contractors to maximize their margins. They were slow to act, constantly pushed for money up front and ultimately we chose to cut our losses and terminate the contract (after a very nasty back and forth with the Owner, Mr. Wilson). I would plead with anyone considering this firm to do your research and make sure you have an ironclad contract with a detailed scope of work and a way OUT. Will note that the office staff (Aloa and Korie) were very kind, and often apologetic but had limited authority.
Response from WDL Lumber
"Unfortunately it does take a long time to get a permit in the City of Houston, especially if you are in the flood zone. The customer wanted to keep the siding on the old garage. Hence the 2 men, sawzall and ladder. The customer tried to tell the engineer how to do his job and the customer's mother threatened one of our employees. The termination of the contract was mutual and we did not build the building."

It went fine but we just decided to go to a different direction so we didn't really use the services after they gave us a quotation. It was a great experience, he was very thorough in his explanations on how the projects will go, more detailed oriented.

They negotiated with HOA; got permits from City; designed and built structure to City code.  The overall time from beginning to end was longer than what I expected.  However the major delay was the HOA and the cold wet weather; both of which was outside the builders control.  The quality of work is outstanding.  Several neighbors have stopped by to admire and complement the structure.

WDL Lumber built a garage for me in the Heights. They worked fast, the quality of work was acceptable once I carefully inspected and pointed out deficiencies. With the correct attention this company can provide you with what you need. Just be careful to check the work and be aware of creeping costs (initial bid was limited, many things that I expected to be included, such as paint, were not )

I was not particularly pleased with them.  The end result and the product in itself was good but they took about 7 or 8 times more time than what they said they would and the other guy who was the main contractor kind of swindled me all the time.  He would come back and tell me that the amount agreed upon was not exactly the amount and it is going to cost more to do this instead of coming up with amount upfront.  I would advice all probably not to use them but at the same time I would say, make sure that you have plenty of time to get the project done.  I would also say to make sure that you have all the details analyzed and figured out wholly and completely before you work with them because they are not particularly honest about everything.  Or I would tell them to get somebody else from the office instead of George.

"We're sorry that (member name removed) feels this way. There were upgrades made that increased the price and also extended the time frame."

George and his staff at WDL were a pleasure to work with! He understood what we wanted and did an excellent job. Our home was built in 1952 and the original garage was converted to a master bedroom suite by the previous owners. We wanted the new garage to look like it has always been here, not an afterthought.  George made sure the height, pitch of the roof and overhang all matched the house.
Any special requests we had were taken care of. It was hard for us to visualize the size of the garage and where it should be built. We wanted adequate space for the cars to pull in and out. George's crew built a frame for the foundation and moved it exactly where we wanted it. This helped so much!  We also didn't want the driveway to butt up against the house, so they left some green space between the two. We didn't want plain garage doors and we were given a choice of custom doors.
Anytime we had any questions they were answered quickly. Many times George came back to the house to check on the work being done by his crew. All permits were pulled and inspections were done. When an inspection was scheduled we were contacted by the office staff so we knew who would be on our property. We were also contacted to let us know when the workmen would be coming and what they would be doing.

Every time George came over, he told us he wanted to be sure we were happy and asked if there was anything else we needed or any questions. We will use WDL again for future projects.

Owner and Staff were responsive and professional.  Some minor misunderstandings about what was included in the original contract were worked out with satisfactory compromises.  I had my own architectural drawings and needed to refer to local code requirements to make sure work was done as desired and expected... I learned a little, but overall it was a good experience.
