Larry Dean [Total Comfort] sent out a weekend tech on Saturday responding to my evaporator and condenser freeze-up issue. Though the tech identified and fixed a sheet of the manufacturer's insulation that had come unglued inside the furnace -inhibiting air flow, it wasn't effective in resolving the AC freezing up.
Follow-up by Jim [weekday tech] was FANTASTIC. Though not immediately able to diagnose the issue [due to another red herring], he came up with a working plan and a means to test his theory. Over the course of 2 weeks, during which the part was ordered, the AC performed pretty well with one hiccup. The new expansion valve was installed per the manufacturer recommendations using the proper copper fastening band at the proper location [based on tube size] on the suction side of the evaporator and then insulated. Jim was very courteous throughout the visits; I was very happy with his thoroughness and attention to detail. We've been enjoying a much cooler home and are expecting lower electric bills again next summer. Will continue to use Total Comfort.
Thanks guys!
Monday dragged on and no one showed up. We called our landlady and asked her where the repair people were. She said that "Jim" canceled the appointment. There was no explaination. We spent another night on the the mattresses on the floor.
The following day we waited until noon and no one called to tell us they were coming. We called the landlady and she contacted them. We were told they would be coming in the afternoon and "Jim" would be the person showing up.
"Jim" showed up around 4 pm and we asked him why he cancelled the day before. He blamed his boss and said it was his fault. We asked him why he blamed us for the AC breaking in the first place and he denied saying that. He went to work and in about 15 minutes announced that he was done and that very soon our bedrooms would be cooled off. On the way out he admitted that the AC units didn't work over the weekend because he had turned them off outside. I was glad to see him leave and looked forward to having our whole house cool again.
Hours later the rooms were just as hot as they had been when "Jim" left after "fixing" them. I called the office number around 8 pm and left a message on "Larry's" phone, who I assume is the boss . It's been over and hour and no one has called. Our landlady just told us she talked to "Jim" who said we needed to give it a little more time and it would cool off. It's been 4 hours since he left and there is no air coming out of the vents and our bedrooms are hot.
I have 2 school aged children and my wife is very ill. This company is by far the worst AC company I have ever delt with. They are incompetent, unprofessional, and clearly don't care about the quality of their work. Do yourself a favor and do not call Total Comfort AC Systems. You can do better with anyone else.
"This customer review posted here is not by the owner of the house but the renter. We were contracted by the owner to service the system and unfortunately the communication to the renter was not what it should of been and for that we apologize. Please see the review posted from (Removed Name) the owner of the home. She is a non-member of Angie's List."
I highly recommend this company they are very professional and truly care about the customer.
On a Saturday, i was lucky enough to reach Paul while he was driving. We chatted for about an hour as he drove, and he explained my options and provided "ball park" estimates. He explained since he had not seen my system and did not have his price book handy (while driving), the prices were more comparative prices. (That was fine by me, since at the time i had just begun my research. In fact i was quite impressed by his breadth and depth of knowledge without the luxury of any books, literature or internet.) Based on his in depth knowledge and reasonable estimates, i invited him to give me a more formal quote. Paul and Larry showed up at the appointed time, reviewed the system and provided me the three quotes requested and several more options. They did not push any option (though their pricing discouraged replacing the King Valve: it was 3X higher than the lowest bid), nor did they push any brand-- they just fully explained my choices and let me decide. I like that.
I opted for a Trane 13 SEER 4T R22 condenser-only solution. I choose this option since 1) The current coil is less than a year old. 2) Although several Providers offered to flush the existing coil so that the 410a could be used, i was concerned that there might be problems (ie incomplete purge) 3) the 410a option was almost 50% higher in cost. 4) The old R22 is slightly more efficient. 5) When reviewing all the bids, this option seemed to be a sweet spot -- where the quotes were most similar-- suggesting less gouging opportunity or a possibility of cut corners. And there were diminishing returns for higher SEER rated options
And i chose Total Comfort b/c 1) they were one of the few Providers that had/offered an R22 condenser solution. 2) they offered the the best wty coverage for this solution. 3) I felt comfortable with Paul's knowledge -- he did not try to talk down to me, or BS me 4) they did not push any solution or any brand, but were quite willing to listen to my thinking and help me with my logic. 5) their quote was in the middle of those i received for this solution The installation went as Paul had suggested it would. Here too the installer did a great job patiently answering all my questions. (Kudos to him -- sorry i forgot his name.) He did not try to BS me nor was he afraid of my questions. This tells me he knew what he was doing. (great confidence builder). Once the install was complete i checked the inside ambient air input/output temp deltas: 20 deg. Definitely better than the 14-15 deg delta i was seeing long before the King Valve failed. Good to see-- indicated that the install was done correctly.Paul stopped by toward the completion of the installation to check on things. It was not needed, but i appreciated it, nonetheless.
I delayed submitting this review for 3 months for a couple reasons. I wanted to see 1) how Total Comfort would handle any issues that came up.-- None have come up, so I have nothing to report. 2) what the impact on my electric bill would be, by moving from an old (maybe 7-8 SEER, effectively) to a 13 SEER. kW usage for upstairs AC has been cut about in half. Granted this is only about $30 a month for these two month, but I expect it to be twice that for the next 3 months. This reduction in kW usage is in line with the improved SEER.
