The contractors were let go when the house owner returned unannounced to find the owner of the company asleep in the owners own bed. This was after missing two days, one because of an unspecified illness, and another because the owner accidentally took a sleeping pill in the morning and could not stay awake. In addition, there was not a square foot of work performed in which there was not a defect. Areas that were supposed to be sanded were not. Two later painters offering bids to fix the damage stated that oil based paints were most certainly not used. The painters did not cover furniture and electronics. Our stereo receiver in the book case had paint splattered all over the face. There was paint on the carpet. The lighter paint on the woodwork was applied so thinly that the darker color was visible underneath through the thick brush stroke lines left by their paint brushes. The darker color on the walls was not applied thick enough, and the lighter color underneath was visible in the valleys of the texturing. In addition, the owner convinced us (since this was our first time to hire interior painters) that "most people never paint the inside of their cabinets, but just leave them the old color." I should have known this was untrue. Shame on me. The owner could never remember the colors we had selected and where to apply those colors. Four times my wife had to remind him the colors we selected. Finally, she gave up, and went around writing the colors on the walls so the owner could remember. Where doors were to painted and the back side of the door frame was not to be painted, the painter simply closed the door, brushed the paint over the door, overlapping various strokes onto the door frame, resulting in two separate colors, one of which was wide brush strokes perpendicular to the direction of the wood frame. Imaging a 4 year old dragging a paint brush with paint across your door and swiping onto the door frame in areas. Darker wall paint dripped onto the lighter chair rail with no attempt to clean or touch it up. Darker wall paint overlapped the lighter base boards. A crack in the sheet rock that was repaired was textured only in that spot, so that the unmatched texture was clearly visible at most any lighting and most any angle. All this, and the owner then declared (after being found napping in our bed), "Come look at this finished room." After my wife pointed out the numerous incomplete areas in this "completed" room, the owner was overheard mumbling to his partner in another room, "I guess we have to deal with Miss Nit-Picky." The painters were fired that evening, at less than half way through the job, but after fronting them approximately 60% of the charges.
Description of Work: Provider was to paint three rooms and a hallway, and all the doors associated with those rooms. In addition, one of the rooms was the kitchen, and the cabinets were to be painted. The painters promised to sand chipped paint areas, prime them, texture sections of wall, and use oil-based paint. Caulking all areas was also committed.
