The guy came out and confirmed the problem in 10 minutes. Then he explained to my wife that the main breaker box was overloaded and would have to be replaced in the future with a cost of about $5000. (we have been in the house for 14 years and have had no problems)
He said he did not have the right breaker on his truck and had to go to the shop and get it. His shop is 15 minutes from my house. He came back and replaced the breaker in about 10 minutes.
He charged me TWO service trips at $180/trip and $140 for the breaker. for a total of $500.
I called another electrician after the fact and he gave me a quote of $250. $100 for the breaker and $150 for labor.
My problem with all of this is that he could have asked me what type of breaker it was so that he would have the breaker on his truck. Most of the time spent was telling my wife how honest he was and how we needed to replace the whole breaker box.
I am okay paying for one service charge of $180, but he knew the diagnosis before he came and he should have came prepared to replace the breaker. I only takes 30 minutes to run to his shop and he charged me $180 for a second service call.
I spoke with him about the fact that I did not feel it was right, but he did not listen to me, he kept interrupting me.
