He decided that I needed a metal supporting beam. Fine. He gave me the contact info and said he would price his part around the beam, and that I should call this guy to have the beam designed and priced. No problem.
I called the beam contact, but they couldn't do that kind of work, but they were quite willing to take over the project. It seems that these guys were, if anything, competitors. They said I should come in and talk about the project. how silly.
so after not hearing from B.J. for several weeks, I tried to call the office. Since I hadn't talked with him in a while I got his name (initials?) backwards when I asked for him. I asked for J.B. rather than B.J. I was told that I had the wrong number. how freaking clueless is that employee!~ give her a raise and move her to the french frying section for added responsibility.
I called back and asked her if asking for J.B. might not have given her a clue that I was actually looking for the one and only B.J. that worked there? She got extremely angry... so all of these very professional actions have convinced me that I should't work with them.
The Cabinet-Installer - I would consider their cabinet-installer an amateur by my standards. The dude basically ?butchered? the back of two new kitchen cabinets, the stove top unit and the kitchen sink unit, all to accommodate the plumbing and electrical supply lines. What I was expecting is that each supply line had it own individual hole cut out and in the case of supply water lines, a nice flange to cover the hole to ?trim? it out. Of course these are underneath a sink and behind drawers but when I showed photos of the completed work to most other professionals, they would not perform that work so shoddily. One mentioned it is a path for insects & bugs to hide out in the favor area in the kitchen. Also, when the dude installed the face frame to the wall oven cabinet, that incident took a couple of years off my life. He installed it with the bottom of the frame touching the floor tile when the plans showed the bottom of the face frame to be elevated above the floor tile. When I challenged him ?What?s going on with this?? and ?This makes the wall oven real low??, he didn?t give me a clear answer other than to ask me ?What height did you want the floor oven at??. I said ?I don?t install floor ovens, you?re the professional what?s the standard?? Anyways, photos are attached of the ?butchered? cabinets. I wasn?t happy about this.
The granite Counter-tops - Not happy how this turned out. First of all, I learned a lot about the epoxy-resin joint the industry uses and know now about the acceptable joint. The joints by Maverick were not the best. I learned a lot about those joints by visiting a home show and talking to many granite fabricators and them telling me about the penny test or finger nail test. That test for the penny, would allow one the flick a penny across the joint and the penny wouldn?t stop or get bumped or slow down. The joints Maverick Remodeling did would not pass those tests.
That?s not the worst on the granite countertops. It wasn?t until I put the house on the market about 3 weeks after they finished with all of their work that I came back to town to put the house on the market. Absent a refrigerator, I noticed something odd about the granite countertop in the slot of the refrigerator,-that side of the cabinet had a finished bullnose similar to the fronts of the cabinets. It protruded out by inch and half. See the attached photos but a refrigerator would not fit into that slot properly. Typically that edge is flush with the side face of the cabinet. Notifying Maverick afterwards, I basically went through flipflops on ?one acknowledging it was a mistake,-they?ll fix it? to ?they forgot,-what?s the problem again? to ?you?re leaving the house without a refrigerator anyways and it would look better to have a finished edge like that to show the house?. I like the last excuse,-riiiight and the new owner is suppose to go out and buy a refrigerator with a notch cut out in it. Anyways, I sensed no proactiveness own their part to trim this and the house was being closed so I told them to forget it. ?Exceptional customer service? in this case would have been a reply of ?We screwed up and we will have someone out there to trim it off on this date.? Didn?t get that,-didn?t get that at all. Funny how they replied immediately on emails during the design development stage early on when I signed the contract but after the balance was paid off and I sent them email on the flaw of the countertops, it was all crickets with them. Anyways the picture says it all.
Their Plumber ? I sent off a letter to the Texas State Department of Plumbing Examiners about this dude. The gas had to be turned off on the house to perform some gas line modificatis. The dude basically was ?playing it up? that there was a problem with my brand new hot water heater when he tried to start the pilot light. He basically wasn?t looking through the sight glass to see the pilot light was lit.
The Fees ? You get charged a trash haul fee of $245. I was expecting this to mean any construction debris accumulated at the end of the day gets hauled off in a reasonable timely manner,-like that day. What it really meant was the workers took their debris to the side of the curb and if the trash man comes by to pick it,-so be it. Otherwise it probably only happened half the expected time that Maverick Remodeling would show up to haul off the trash.
Next we signed a contract and they started work on painting. After painting they tore out the old kitchen and 1 bathroom (if you remodel all your bathrooms they will keep one working so you will always have one). During the painting we did spent 5 nights in a local Hotel, due to the fact that they had to remove our 1988 popcorn ceiling. There was a mess everywhere, but when it was finished everything got cleaned up and moved back. BJ even sent his housekeeper one day, thank goodness.
Next, the old cabinets were pulled out and the plumber and electrician went to work. We are moving our oven and dishwasher to a new spot, so the logistics need to be worked out. Next week, everything will be inspected and then cabinets can be installed, then all the fixtures.
Amilicar is the person that does the tile and he has done beautiful work in the master bath. Good tilemen are artists, and that describes Amilicar.
We are even going to have the crew reo and upgrade some of the landscaping. Overall, it is good to establish a good relationship with a group of people that provide a good service at a fair price. Although this has been a stressful experience and there has been a great deal of dust.
We are down to the punch list and I feel like Maverick has moved on. We still need some touch up painting and some baseboards reinstalled. Hoping to get this done this week (June 10)
