CARPET INSTALL: The carpeting looked great installed, although I had to push it down along the wall in a couple of places where they missed. I was a bit annoyed by the amount of dust and carpet fibers covering the baseboards and low window sills, which I cleaned. They vacuum the carpeting after installing, why not the baseboards? Also, I overheard from an adjacent room the work leader asking his workers about dents in a door, which they denied. Nothing was said to me and I didn't see anything when inspecting with the work leader after the install. Upon closer examination after they left, I closed one of the doors, which was open during the inspection, and noticed two small dents near the bottom of one of the closet doors along with a carpet fiber and dust. It appears it was struck by a tool, perhaps when ripping up the old carpeting or tack strip.
VINYL INSTALL: Had to wait almost 2 months for the vinyl install because of the delay in the ordering process. According to them, this wait is relatively common for vinyl. The vinyl looked great after installation, and the quarter-round, which backs up against the existing baseboard, was appropriately cut in the corners.
However, upon closer inspection after the installers left, I noticed the caulking of the gap between the quarter-round and the baseboard was done sloppily. Not enough was used to fill the gap in some places, and in a couple of places, there was a 2 to 3 inch gap without any caulk. In some other places caulk was smeared on the quarter-round itself, particularly in the closet, where it would be less noticeable I guess. I went ahead and re-caulked and cleaned off the residue. Furthermore, I wiped off vinyl glue residue in a few places off the floor itself. These issues annoyed me, particularly since I actually saved the crew time and effort by telling them they didn't have to paint the quarter-round (I would do it later), and by moving the furniture in and out of the room myself (the painting and moving are included in the installation price). Also, none of the hinge pins on the 3 doors that were removed were replaced properly. They were all sticking out above the hinges. One was sticking out above the hinge more than 2 inches. I got them all back in place without much trouble, basically just some tapping. Another thing was leaving the front door open for extended periods while the AC was on. Some workers closed the door behind them, but at least one kept leaving it wide open, so I closed it when I realized there was no purpose for it being open, other than convenience I guess. Finally, some companies lay down a runner to protect floors they are going back and forth on. This is would be a simple recommendation. I happily provided a dust pan and rags as they requested and let them know where the restroom was if needed, and otherwise let them do their thing without hanging over them. They were courteous enough, but I think there is room for improvement concerning service.
I put a "B" for price only because there were less expensive alternatives, BUT. . . this is clearly an example of "you get what you
pay for". Incredible quality, unbeatable work efforts, value results!
The quality of the wood was great, all of the in-store staff were courteous, friendly, and knowledgeable, and the installers were equally wonderful. The installers removed our carpet, prepped the floors and installed the wood, painted the trim, put all our furniture back and even put pads underneath all the furniture as not to scratch the floors. They did accidentally do some damage to our walls (I don't know how, I didn't see it) but they were extremely apologetic and offered to fix it, but it was so minor - and they were so sorry- that I just fixed it myself with a few dabs of paint.
The floors look great and I would recommend them to anyone in a heartbeat!
