I bought a brand new built home in March 2012, and I needed to have a lot done to make it perfect.  So I asked my realtor who he knew and trusted to get the job done.
Ted Trevino of Wizards Carpet and Contracting was referred to me by my realtor.  I trusted my realtor and I have been using my realtor for a long time (several years).  So I hired Ted without doing my research on him because he came from a trusted referral.  If I would have known then what I know now I would have never in a million years ... even with a gun to my head ... have hired him.
Ted came out and seemed like a great guy, someone I thought I could trust.  He is very personable and can talk up a great game.  He knows how to use customer service techniques prior to obtaining his job.  He gave me a quote to for all of the work needed and stated the job would cost $7,200 and take eight "8" days to complete and that he would pull a city permit ... and oh yes, that he was fully insured and bonded.  So he gave me a contract and we signed it.  I gave him half up front to start the job with the balance to come at the end of the job.
His guys came into the house to start the job, and they would work for a few hours and then leave for the day with very little done.  I would call Ted to ask what was going on.  He would give me excuse after another on why the guys would leave and not to worry the job would get done.  The next day no one showed up.  For over a week no one showed up.  Then the next week (after the 8-eight day completion date) a new different crew showed up and worked about half a day.  It took his crew of constantly changing people two "2" months to finish painting the house and install the ceiling fans.  However, the closets and the laundry room were NEVER painted as they were supposed to, and they spilled paint everywhere.  So really they only painted part of the house to include my floors.
After four "4" months of dealing with this massive mess (literally) he never came back, never returned my calls and dropped off the face of the earth.   Why?  Well there are several big huge reasons why but lets start with the obvious.
1.  Everything he started I have had to hire new people to finish the jobs.  So the cost is now tripled than what I first anticipated because most of his work had to get torn down and done again.
2.  He NEVER completed the garage conversion.
3.  He never finished painting.
4.  He broke several items in my home and never replaced them.
5.  He had a worker screaming throughout my house about a week before he disappeared cursing and threatening to take Ted to court for not paying him and never following through with what he says he will do.  Then the guy went into the garage a broke a ton of furniture and poured paint EVERYWHERE!!!!
6.  He installed the hot tub wiring incorrectly and with ALUMINUM (it should have been copper) so the breaker kept shutting down when I turned on the hot tub.
7.  Never installed the security lights.
8.  Never built the entertainment center.
9.  Never installed the insulation.
10.  Never completed the a/c vents.
11.  Never pulled a city permit.
12.  Is NOT insured or bounded.
And the top reason why he never finished or contacted me back ...
HE STOLE FROM ME!!!!!  HIS GUYS STOLE THE EXCESS MATERIALS THAT I PAID FOR!!!!!!!!  HE TOOK CHECKS AND CASHED THEM WITHOUT MY PERMISSION THAT WERE NOT MADE OUT TO HIM.  NOT TO MENTION THE MONEY I PAID UP FRONT ... WAS A WASTE!!!!!
THIS MAN IS A CROOK!!!!!!  HE IS A LIAR AND A THEIF!!!!!!!  HE IS NOT A GOOD MAN ... HE IS THE MOST DISHONEST PERSON I HAVE EVER MET!!!!!!!!!
I hate that I found out the hard way about this guy!!!!
I recently joined Angie's List and looked him up.  To NOOOOOOO SURPRISE he already had an "F" rating.  I really wish I would have joined this site way before I ever thought about hiring him.  Should of - would of - could of .... my mistake may save your from yours.  At least one good thing will come from this, well a couple.  One - I get to warn others to stay clear of this crook, and two - SAPD will be arresting his butt very soon!!!!
I WILL NEVER HIRE ANOTHER WORKER IN MY LIFE WITHOUT FIRST CONSULTING WITH ANGIE'S LIST!!!!!!

Flooring, Ceramic Tile Service
$3,000
Ted Trevino of Wizards Carpet and Contacting came out to give me an estimate on removing ceramic tile on the first floor followed by the installation of 18" travertine.  He was recommended to me by Metro Wholesale Flooring and gave me a great price, although informed me the work had to be done the following week due to other work commitments.  It was a bit earlier then we planned but we agreed.  Ted and his "team" were to start work on Monday and finish on Saturday, 6 days.  It was a big job to complete in 6 days, about 1000 sqft, so to assist them we completely removed everything from the rooms to be tiled (including pictures, curtains, etc.).  The first day I was concerned when only Ted and Hector showed up to work on the floor.  Work progressed slowly and a pattern soon developed....arrival times were sporadic, on several occasions they arrived unprepared for the days work even borrowing tools from us and one day a plummer that was there doing work, no matter when they started... work ended at 5pm with tools being left where they had stopped working and me left vacuuming up yard debris that had been tracked in and attempting to clean surfaces of the dust (which I realize is part any remodel).  On many occasions Ted did not show up or left for parts of the day leaving just one worker.  Not surprising it took 9 days instead of 6. On the last day they finished grouting and 'cleaned up' the back yard with a promise to be back in 4 days to seal the tile.  They left with the tiles still coated with grout, walls and tile and baseboards covered with thin set, powder room sink un-installed, thresholds between rooms that were not tiled un-installed, and tools left behind.  Just glad for the unpleasant process to finally be ending we used the 4 days to get everything ready for sealing day, including work that they should have done, such as, installing the sink, installing 1/4 round (which also included removing all the nails they hammered against the base boards rather than removing),  and cleaning thin set and grout off the tiles, walls, and baseboards, and putting grout into missed seams.  I was disappointed that there were so many small noticeable lips between the tiles, and a few hollow sounding tiles but otherwise the actual installation was fair.   Around 11:30pm the night before seal day I spoke with Ted and he said he would arrive around 9:30am after he picked up the sealer at 9:00am.  At around 8:00am on Saturday morning I received a text saying he would not be coming and could probably come on Monday, July 4th!?.  Unprofessional, unpredictable, disappointing, and frustrating is all I have to say about Ted Trevino.  I told him to finish the job that day as promised or we had nothing left to discuss....my family and I ended up purchasing the sealer and spent the day sealing the floor .  Worst experience of my whole life!  Two days later one of the hollow sounding tiles broke but we were able to replace it ourselves.
Response from Wizards Carpet And Contracting
"First, I would like to apologize to the Member family. I should not have taken the job in the first place, evidently. I dont want this to seem like an excuse driven response, but I would like to explain myself. When I came to give the estimate, I initially told Member that our general charge for a job like this was $2 per foot to pull up the existing tile, and $3.50 per foot to install travertine. I was told by my wholesale company, Metro, that she was a previous, customer, and that it would be a good idea to get the work, and give her a great deal. So I did. My mistake. I did a job we generally charge $5,500.00, for $3,200.00. My second mistake was accepting their offers. I told them that moving furniture and installing 1/4 round was extra, and of course, was told that they would take care of that themselves. Should I have argued with her? I told her the day before we started the job, that we would be there at 9am, to assess the job, and find out what kind of tools we would need. When we got there, it became evident we would need an air hammer. Member offered his, I DID NOT ASK FOR IT, and instead of wasting my own money renting one, because we dont often pull up ceramic tile, I decided to accept his offer. A good financial decision for me, I thought. Again, I guess I should have said no. Aside from that the review is fairly accurate. There were days I was not there all day, I did have other business to tend to, but I had someone there every day. Travertine is a hard product to work with, and the Travertine purchased, that WAS NOT purchased from Metro Wholesale, was not a high quality product, which made for an even tougher installation. I was not able to make it that Saturday to seal the tile and grout, and told her that I WOULD be there on Monday, not that I might. I had told her that I could not imagine installing a floor that nice, spending that much time on it, and not sealing it. I meant what I said. Unfortunately, I had family business that day to tend to, and didnt trust anyone but myself to seal Travertine, so I asked if we could reschedule for Monday, which we had already discussed may be a possibility. She then got upset with me, and told me NOT to come Monday. I work on holidays when I need to, its just another day. I would have been there Monday had she allowed me to. It was not totally my fault that it didnt work with the family schedule. That happens sometimes. All in all, I believe the Member family got a great deal on their new flooring. I wish there were more documentation for what actually happened. Its frustrating for a small company to have plenty of customers that have 0 bad things to say, and have 1 customer that felt slighted, and be judged for that. Please understand that my company does great work, and obviously, nearly none of our jobs go like this."
