"Wow! What a shame, this review, as I was open n honest every step of the way. Transportation issues? My transmission went out on me (almost $4,000) the end of December, n I was without transportation for most of the month. Want to see pictures of towed auto or invoices??? Staining-- I went way above, applying 2 n 3 coats of stain to main flooring areas, plus stained a large bench n cabinet, n sink area, @ no extra cost. The project came out very well. Oh well,..., can not please everybody. PS-- Proud of the work, n professionalism displayed by my company!!!"
"This is very disappointing. This is classic "false expectations". Why did this review come almost a year later??? The deck was in very bad shape. Years of neglect, 2/3 large dogs, cigarette butts, grease from grill n wax on deck, etc. I even took pictures to protect myself, which I have since deleted, as I thought this was way past. I did the right thing by sanding the whole deck, n brushed on 2 coats of an OIL BASED Stain. The deck was in such poor condition, it NEEDED an oil based stain. I could have taken the easy way out, n stained a latex n been done with it. Heck, latex dries in 2-4 hours. Oil is 12-24 hours. I am getting chastised for "doing the right thing". It took two (2) weeks to dry??? Really? I do not think so. I even forewarned her n Toby there would be minor color variances? [Member name] keeps mentioning the owner. Funny, I am the owner, n I did the work. Again, disappointing. Maybe [Member name] is correct on one point,..., every now n then things do not turn out 110%. I do quality work (2 brushed on coats), and take pride in it. In fact, I could have charged more for the condition of the deck, which was clearly spelled out in the agreement, but I decided not to. Silly me. See what happens when you try to do the right thing. Best regards, John Winters, Jr. Owner U Buy I Apply Staining"
Five years later, the deck is now nine years old and badly in need of refinishing. This time I consulted Angie's List and contacted John Winters at U Buy I Apply Staining. He arrived at our home the same day to provide an estimate. On the minute. Upon examining the deck, he said the job would consist of hand sanding the deck with an electric palm sander, then application of the stain with a brush. His plan of action was to sand the deck and apply one coat of stain, returning the following day to apply the second coat.
However, I had already purchased a new supply of the same product I had used five years earlier, and insisted on using it rather than a product from a paint store or home improvement store. John was unfamiliar with this product, but agreed to use it. A key difference in the TWP product is the requirement that it be applied "wet on wet", that is, do not allow the first coat to dry before applying the second coat. He contacted the manufacturer directly and discussed the application with a TWP product specialist to confirm the wet on wet procedure.
I was skeptical at his contention that there was no need to prepare the deck beforehand, so the day before his appointment, I proceeded to pressure wash and scrub the deck in preparation for sanding. After doing 1/2 the deck I recognized I was wasting my time and resolved to let John do it his way, and then comparing the finished product on the surface I had pressure washed vs the remainder.
On the appointed day, John was running late but kept me informed and ensured I was not being inconvenienced. He finally arrived within five minutes of his latest estimated arrival time, 9:30am. He had one assistant with him. He immediately pronounced my effort at prepping the deck had been unnecessary, then proceeded to sand the deck. When the entire deck had been sanded, I could see he was correct. The entire deck presented a like-new surface, ready to accept the stain. The stain application was uneventful other than the fact that the wood was clearly thirsty, rapidly absorbing the stain within minutes. Employing the wet on wet procedure, John and his assistant actually completed the entire deck the same day, sanding, then applying both coats of stain and then cleaning up, all done by 8pm. Using the brushes, they ensured full, penetrating coverage, no pools of stain, and they used less than 3 gallons of the five gallon can of stain.
The following day, and the day after that, have revealed a deck surface that looks and feels better than when the deck was brand new. A third finishing coat (my option) will be applied following renovation of the swimming pool later this summer.
I am completely satisfied with the job done by John Winters and his assistant, Armando. They were clean, friendly and courteous. They were professional. It's evident that he enjoys this work and takes pride in the results. I recommend him without reservation and look forward to his visit to apply the third coat.
"GM. This is disappointing. I ran a Big Deal promotion in November, and had 8-10 jobs. I was dealing with juggling numerous projects, and poor weather. Yes, shame on me for going to Boston for the holiday season. I stayed in contact with Mr. [member name removed] the whole time. Bottom line, I did a great job on his project, and he purchased it @ a great price. So be it."
It was at this point that I decided to take a chance and call John at "U Buy, I Apply Staining." I was a touch reluctant at first since I wasn't sure if he was going to be able to take on a project this large. I called him and he was able to stop by that very day to thoroughly review the scope of work and offer his suggestions on an approach. We ultimately agreed on a price of $1,500 for the entire deck and playground set. He also allowed us to utilize his discount at HD so we could purchase all of the stain for the job, which he picked up the next morning before coming over. This discount alone saved us nearly $60 on materials. All-in, materials for this job added another $250 to my cost, which still put it nearly $2K less than the nearest other bid I received.
It took John nearly 6 days of 10-12 hour days to complete this job. He could have done it quicker but he insisted on hand-brushing every part of it; ensuring maximum absorption and quality. You can really tell that he cares deeply about the job that he's doing and is passionate about ensuring the customer is completely satisfied with his work. The deck looks awesome! I can't imagine it looking any better had I chosen one of the larger companies in the area. In fact, I'm sure it would have come out looking inferior to the work he did, no doubt I would have had a crew of disenfranchised teenagers out there with some of the other firms.
I highly recommend calling John out to get a quote from him before committing to one of the larger, more-established companies out there. He's incredibly honest and genuine and will do his best to ensure you are satisfied. Communication with him is seamless and his work ethic is to be admired. He truly enjoys what he does and it shows through his work.
Thanks John!
FULLY SATISIFIED. I HAVE A 600 SQ FEET DECK THAT INCLUDED A BUILT IN POOL AND WALKWAYS WITH STAIRS. JOHN PROVIDED PROFESSIONAL ADVICE THAT PREVENTED A POTENTIAL MISTAKE. I ALLOWED JOHN TO WORK AT HIS OWN SCHEDULE AND THIS WORKED FOR BOTH OF US. WE HAD TO WORK AROUND THE WEATHER CONDITIONS. I WAS ESPECIALLY IMPRESSED THAT JOHN HAND SANDED THE DECK , IN AREAS DOWN TO BARE WOOD TO ENSURE A GOOD BOND.
All went well- my deck looks great! John did a wonderful job! I would definitely recommend him for your staining projects. He was punctual and professional. He did all the work by hand. He completed the job in the time frame that he estimated. He cleaned up the area nicely before he left and my deck looks awesome!!
