My home does not have a water softener loop. Called Dr. Dorsey and he came out and quoted for a 45 grain water softener as well as running a loop from the water main. They dug a trench from the front of the house around the back of the house to the opposite side. Ran the lines into the garage next to the water heater. Used existing cleanout drain on side of house for water softener discharge. Started at 9 am and finished everything by 1 pm. First rate operation all the way. Also installed two outside hose bibs to provide hard water on the outside of the house since my existing hose bibs now dispense soft water. Little things such as using escutcheon plates provided the polishing touch for a first class job. At this point in time, I can already notice the difference in the quality of the water.
You can not go wrong in using these folks.
The feed and return lines to the softener were 3/4and quot; copper lines. The tech was using PEX elbows and tubing to make the connection from the main lines to the softener valve. Problem being that, the PEX elbows restrict the pipe diameter from 3/4and quot; to what looked to be 7/16and quot; for each fitting. There were (3) fittings in each line, and two lines to and from the softener valve. Hence there were essentially (6) flow restrictions on the main water line feeding the entire house.
I pointed out my concern to the tech, and was told this was the way that Dorsey always did the installations, that they would work fine, and that they did not have any options. Being a construction professional myself, I questioned that statement, and requested them to replace the PEX system with a copper flex hose that would not restrict the water flow through the service line. I stated to the tech that I was sorry for the inconvenience but that I would pay additional money to provide the full sized line if money was the problem.
The tech called his supervisor (I believe Mr Dorsey but am not sure). He was instructed to tell me that the PEX installation was the only method that they would use. I was left with the choice of accepting the PEX fittings, or not doing the job. I chose to have them remove their equipment and leave, which they did.
To be fair, the technician was courteous at all times, and they left without collecting any money from me. I believe that their softener equipment is of good quality (at least it appeared to be), I just wish that their customer satisfaction approach was better. My thought is that, if a customer has a legitimate concern with your installation, and is willing to pay extra for something to get it done the way they want it, then the service provider should be willing to cooperate with the customer to work out a solution (or at least make more of an effort than they did with me). I would not recommend this service company to any of my friends looking for a water softener installation because of this experience.
