I was quoted 75, including tax for a one gram gold coin.  This was well above the spot rate.  I was charged $80.  That was after I asked them if they typically sold at spot and was told yes.  
It's a beautiful store with wonderful items, but if they're going to mess with me for just $5 on an already over priced small item... well then why would I buy anything more valuable.  
At least they had the coin, were knowledgeable and actually answered the phone, which was not my experience with other specialty jewelry stores, which are sometimes family owned and staffed with family that doesn't always know the business well enough.  
Maybe you'll have a better experience.  I didn't think I'd fall prey to the same ball of wax I've had to deal with being a foreigner in India. Oh well, it could have been worse.  If I go back I'll haggle instead of just accepting the price and maybe I'll take an Indian friend as backup.  Frankly, I did better haggling in India.
When it's all said and done, the fact of the matter is all jewelry purchases are buyer beware.  It's not like you'll get a good price, service, or even knowledgeable sales people at one of the chains no matter how long they've been in the business and think they know.  In the end, small specialty shops are still probably the way to go, just understand that you're dealing with tough negotiators and businessmen.
