Yard crews were often not aware of instructions. Even after months of service, grass was brown, sparse and full of weeds.
Before retaining in October 2013, I specifically asked if it was too late in the year to install and should I wait until Spring. I was assured no. Also, after getting quotes from three other companies it was assumed installs were all the same. Turns out not to be the case. The other bids all stated they would till the dirt (hard Texas clay) and lay some top soil if necessary to ensure sod takes hold. It was wrongly assumed this company would do the same.
When installed I had to call to have them return and fill in significant areas they didn't install sod into on side of house and then after waiting the few days before walking on it, I found holes under the sod that I had to pull back the sod and fill in myself. So basically empty cavities covered by the sod.
STATUS Today - my yard is worse now then before they installed. I have called in two companies to come out and inspect why my recently sodded yard is a mess. It turns out the dirt was not tilled before installing the sod and the ground was somewhat scraped to get rid of the old dead grass and the new sod simply placed on hard compact Texas dirt. So now the yard is the worse yard on the block.
A total of four companies have now told me that for sod to work on Texas soil you cannot just scrape old grass and slap down new sod and expect it to take hold, especially in the fall. The two most recent companies all said doing so doubled the risk of failure for it not to be tilled due to the type and hardness of the soil. They explained that if the soil was at least softened before setting it would have at least had a chance to take root.
So now I have more of the old grass growing through the dead sod, then the new grass from the sod, not to mention the weeds. NICE.....
