The day after, we contacted HDs and asked whether they could replace that sink. They said they could. Then the waiting game began - we sent many emails, on average probably more than 1/week for 5 weeks straight to ask them when they would come out and replace that sink. The slow responses were as follows:
- "You can come by and pick up the sink and install it yourself." (In that case it would have been free for us as 'former customers')
- "We can install the sink for you but will charge for labor." - Fine. Go ahead and do it, please! We much rather have an experienced person do this than do it ourselves.
- "We can come out and install it but it will only be in two weeks." - Fine as well, but could you tell us exactly when in two weeks you would be here? No response...
- Another 10 days later: "Oh, we thought our guy had already been out there..."
Mind you, we had written a great (and very deserved) review on Angie's List for the first job. Harry, the owner, had called us back then and asked if he could use us as a reference, and someone did in fact call to inquire about HDS, we even recommended the company to friends on a few occasions. Plus - $11,000 for the previous job was not exactly pocket change. But getting them out here to replace that sink was way harder than it should have been. We had to stay in hot pursuit and bother them to the point where I am sure they just wanted to get rid of us and finally scheduled the replacement.
The person that came out here to do the job had quite the attitude. I said Hello to him, he looked at me, then looked away and simply continued with the sink installation as if I wasn't there. Because I kept standing there, he finally gave me a mumbled Hello back - about 20 seconds later. He then asked me for a Band Aid. I went, got him one, said "Here you go" and held it out to him. He just let me stand there with the Band Aid in hand, and kept working. I finally placed it on top of the counter and told him that. But even then he could not be bothered to acknowledge it or thank me. I went back 10 minutes later to ask if he needed a different size Band Aid and then he informed he that he hadn't even looked at the Band Aid yet! (I guess I asked for that - should have known better!).
In short this was as unpleasant as could be. Based on this last experience with HDS I would never recommend them again. They were so very quick to schedule us for the $11,000 reno but we basically had to beg them to come out and replace the sink.
They seriously need to work on their customer retention skills.
From our first visit to installation was only three weeks. We supplied our own new undermount sink, and reused our exisiting faucets etc.
The team did an excellent job on installation day. Old countertops removed, new ones installed. One of our pieces was a very odd shape due to the kitchen layout and despite the laser measurements we had to have some cutting into the dry wall. They did a great job of levelling the countertop even though our cabinets were not all at exactly the same level. And the pattern had been laid out on the slabs to give an extremely good join from one piece to the next, not easy with the granite we chose. I was impressed by the attention to detail of the installers, and the way they finished off the job and cleared up at the end of day.
Great price and good service, very impressed.
Reading some of the (albeit older) negative reviews, I need to stress how important it is to sort out before the install EXACTLY what you want done - where holes are going to be drilled etc - and not leave it to the day of the install before thinking about these things.
"(member name removed) did not have us install her top. She picked it up at our shop. She wanted to re-use her existing sink that was glued on to her existing counter top. We were able to successfully remove the sink from her existing top without breaking it, but were not able to remove all of the hardened glue without breaking the sink. I guess she or whomever she had installing it could not remove the glue either. As to the fabrication and pick up date we gave her a pick up date of eight days. We are usually at least a week out to fabricate and pick up counter tops."
A company representative came out and measured the area for the granite.
The installers brought the granite out and installed it. The granite is beautiful. The problem is that the installer drilled the hole for the vessel sink in the wrong place. The contractor was told by the home owner that the sink was to be and quot;Centeredand quot; on the counter top. The home owner was present when installers were in the home and instructed the installer to and quot;CENTERand quot; the vessel on the counter top. Unfortunately the HDS Stonework employee drilled the hole one and a quarter inch off center and would not accept any responsibility. This causes the sink to be closer to the back splash and the faucet even closer making it difficult to clean the counter. When this was brought to the attention of the contractor he said nothing could be done about the mistake. When the home owners contacted HDS Stoneworks they were told that it was the home owners fault that their employee drilled the hole where he did and they were unwilling to do anything about the problem. We are extremely disappointed in the finished product and responsiveness of this business. We will never do business with this company again or recommend them to anyone.
"Mrs. (member name removed) e-mailed our company saying that our installers had drilled the hole for her faucet in the wrong place on her countertop. Upon discussion with our installer and with the contractor who was brokering the job, they both told the same story. Mr. (member name removed) discussed with the contractor in the presence of our installer where to place the faucet and the sink. Mr.(member name removed) called his wife during the discussion and consulted with her. After about 20 minutes of discussion Mr. (member name removed) instructed the installer on where to drill the holes for the faucet and the sink in the presence of the contractor. Mr. (member name removed) made no objection to the placement of both the faucet and the sink. At a later date, Mrs. (member name removed) confronted the contractor and said she did not like the placement of the sink. The contractor explained to her that the sink was in the proper location in relationship to where her husband had wanted to have the faucet placed and that both he and the installer had followed Mr. (member name removed)’s instruction on placement of both the sink and faucet. She then contacted our company by e-mail and stated that she “should have been there herself”. Her only resolution at the time was to have the countertop completely remade or refund her money. According to the contractor, because Mrs. (member name removed) was unreasonable in this and other aspects of the remodel, in his frustration with her and his desire to finish the job, he offered her $175 to accept the faucet and sink as they were. She accepted this offer. He was not surprised that she accepted the money. Since this was a brokered job and our client was the contractor we will have to rely on his assessment."
"[removed member name] selected slabs from a local stone yard and we purchased them for him. The slabs were booked matched, which means one slab was polished on the front side and the next slab in the bundle was polished on the back side. That way you can lay them side by side and the pattern will match. Both slabs had the fissures in the same place on the slab. We explained that the fissures in the material were natural to the stone as explained in two different documents signed by [removed member name]. He not only viewed the slabs at our shop, but spent time laying out where his counter tops would be cut on the slab. The pony wall on which the bar top set moved and was not level. We leveled the bar top by raising it slightly Had the wall been level and we placed our granite directly on top, there would have been no need to raise the granite. This is the same wall that butts up on the other side to the counter top in which the granite cuts into the sheet rock. We explained that it is common in the industry to cut into the sheet rock and that the back splash would cover this. We drilled standard holes for the faucets which were concealed by the escutcheons on the faucet. [removed member name] did not mention that as a good will offering we agreed to re-fabricate and install his counter top if he bought another slab. So far, he has refused our offer."
Thanks, HDS!!
"We installed this job in June of 2010. I was very surprised to see a review posted in 2013. I have no record of (removed member name) or husband (removed member name) calling us regarding any plumbing or back splash issues. However, I did attempt to call (removed member name) and sent an e-mail on July 28, 2013 to inquire about her husband's complaints. As of this date I not had a response."
The entire remodel took only 6 days with no idle (or no-show) days in-between. At times there was more than one crew working - it was all extremely well organized and scheduled to achieve maximum efficiency. The main 3-person crew around their supervisor Polo was always on time, professional, polite and most of all accommodating. We literally requested a last-minute change after the job was complete (we did not like the bottom of the niche in the shower), and Polo immediately understood what we were saying and offered to come back the following work day to make the change. They came back as they had said they would and it all was as painless as can be. I would also like to mention that they did a fabulous job cleaning up afterwards. In addition, they tidied up each night right before they went home, minimizing to the unavoidable the impact the remodel had on us.
The experience was as smooth as can be, and even when there was an incident of miscommunication, HDS went above and beyond and offered to make it right.
I would also like to mention that the mood between the workers seemed to be positive. These weren't people that hated what they were doing and - case in point - I had a brief conversation with the supervisor who told me that he had been working for the owner of the company for around 17 years. This says a lot about HDS as well - it is not a fly-by-night operation and the quality of workmanship was accordingly.
Lastly, one of the things we appreciated the most about HDS was that there was never an attempt made to up-sell. We asked Harry and Cindy (the owners) for their opinion on design choices on numerous occasions, and never once were we steered toward the more expensive choice and quot;just becauseand quot;. We always felt that we got their honest and real opinion and that they kept us and our ultimate goal in mind whenever they suggested something.
The following Saturday, the HDS install team showed up promptly at 9 a.m. to begin the countertop install. I can't say enough great things about the installation team. The team leader was very communicative and went above and beyond to make sure our kitchen was beautifully done. He even fixed a few issues we had with the new cabinets we had installed; some spots weren't sitting level and he ensured they were level before the countertop was installed. Throughout the process, he asked us questions to make sure everything looked the way we wanted it. He even asked what width we would like the grout lines in the backsplash to be; he obviously has great attention to detail.
The team was at our home from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. installing about 60 square feet of countertops and 30 square feet of backsplash. The backsplash was subway tile, so it had to be laid one piece at a time, and it is absolutely stunning. The installation team works very well together, and they were all very communicative and open with us throughout the entire day.
The process from start to finish (from our first visit to their store through the installation) was about three weeks, and HDS was very flexible with our schedule. My kitchen is fabulous; I am overjoyed with the work they've done.
HDS is a wonderful company; I have already recommended them to two other homeowners, and I would use them again without hesitation.
"(1) Courtesy Call: The member called Judy and myself and asked that we give him a courtesy call when the guys were on their way to install the granite. He said it would take him some time to corral his cats as they scatter and hide when a person comes to the door. Both of us told him we would inform the shop to do so. However, we could not guarantee that the message would be communicated at the shop on the return trips because it is not our regular policy to call, we usually just give a window of time. On the first visit he was given a courtesy call. However, on the next trip the message was not conveyed and they did not call. We did not want to promise him something knowing that the communication on follow-up trips may not occur. (2) The crew: The crew chief always speaks English and all of our installers pay taxes. (3) Bar Backsplash: The member had come in originally with drawings and lengths for his backsplash. He had asked that a granite backsplash be made at his raised bar behind the sink. He specified the length and stated that he wanted the backsplash under the bar. The countertop goes on past the bar to the right. Harry tried to explain to the member that he was following his written instructions to install the backsplash only under the bar. The length he gave us did not extend all the way to the end of his countertop. Harry did tell him he would re-cut and install the bar backsplash, which we did at no additional cost. (4) Faucet: The member claimed that we scratched his faucet so Harry told him to reduce the price by $185.70 which is what he paid for the faucet. (5) Follow-up: We did follow up with the member. It is during these conversations that we discussed the faucet, the fact that he was frustrated that instead of helping him find a screw on the floor they opened the door and brought in the granite which could potentially have let his cats out, that they left dust on his lawn and on his corvette. We told him we were very sorry about the dust. They guys have to cut granite outside so it reduces the dust inside."
