Our concern is that someone else will unknowingly use his services and be grossly overcharged. We ended up compromising on the fee but we still overpaid what the job should have cost. We had no complaints on workmanship - We felt pressured by Ted to begin simple deck project earlier than stated, and that should have been a clue to wait. As the project moved forward we realized it was going to take half the time projected. We asked for the flat labor cost of 3000 to be explained and he said it was based on actual hours worked and gave us the base rate during estimate phase, and in good faith we believed him. After 3 days of work, the numbers didn't add up. We addressed the topic with Ted and what ensued was several days of text wars with my husband.( which is why I rated professionalism at a C) upon further investigation we found out he marked up the material costs by about 30% . In the estimate phase when asked why the materials were so high he said it was because it was better quality and it wasn't, we actually called lumber yard and found out he marked up everything, literally everything. Do research before making a decision and do not agree to flat price on labor unless you define how many days project should take. Find out where materials are coming from and check on it yourself. I'm sure there are other well qualified licensed contractors willing to give good faith estimates without price gouging.
