Two days later, I called back, the same technician answered the phone. I asked about the fan and he said he already had the fan and when could he come over. By this time, tomorrow morning was the best I could do.
He called after his first job was done and arrived as promised. He replaced the fan and the same thing happened as before (fan won't start). He told me that the circuit board must be bad and that sometimes the fan may take out the circuit board as well. He opened up the original fan and there was no evidence of charring whatsoever. I looked at the circuit board and it had no evidence of charring either. He drove off and said he would call be back with a circuit board quote.
I decided to look into the outdoor unit myself. I put back the original fan and took out their new $1150 fan. I examined the defrost control board and discovered that a gecko had crawled behind the circuit board and looked freshly dead. Once I pulled his lifeless body out, the diagnostic LED started flashing with the code that everything was okay. I put the unit back together and it cooled out house properly that night.
