Owner comes by and
The first step was to pour the concrete and build the arbor. When that was complete, we showed pictures of the flagstone colors we wanted to use as well as the basic pattern we wanted them to follow when laying the stones. As the crew was laying the stones, the level towards the patio door was higher than we had discussed. We addressed this with the crew, and they stopped their work until it could be resolved. They re-worked the area to our satisfaction.
It took some calls and more time than we expected for them to clean up and haul everything off after the job was completed. Although we had just communicated that we would pay the balance on the job once all of the lumber and left over materials had been removed, Mike stopped by anyway asking for payment before the job was complete. We found that to be somewhat irritating.
Other than a few issues, we are happy with the end result. The patio is well-made, looks very nice, and has been a happily usable outdoor extension to our living space.
Mon. 6/24 - supposed to start but didn't show and didin't call. I called them and was told they were still waiting on HOA approval and would call me in a couple of days.
Wed. 6/26 - I called to get a status update and left a message.
Thur 6/27 - they finally called me back and told me they would start Monday 7/1
Sun 6/30 - they called and left me a message saying they couldn't start Monday but would start Thur 7/4. I called back and told them no. I didn't not when them starting work on a holiday. I told them to start the following Monday 7/8. They agreed but asked if they could leave the materials in my driveway and asked "which side of the driveway would be better". I said either side was fine.
Mon 7/1 - I got home to find my entire driveway was covered with materials. I could not park in my driveway. I called and left a message explaining the situation and asking for a call back. I didn't not receive a return call that evening.
Tue 7/2 - still did not receive a return call. I called again when I got home that afternoon because I still could not park in my driveway.
7/3 - finally got a return call stating they had moved the materials so I could get into my driveway.
7/8 - they began work and finished within a few days. The fence looks good, but I wouldn't use them or recommend them due to the owners terrible communication.
"At that time Future Fence had a new owner, who has since left the business. Mike Kaplan, the original owner, is now back in charge and intends to eliminate any future unhappy customers"
My quote included four columns, but I didn't like the way the gate's metal pole looked so Mike covered it with a column. Fantastic idea! I went with cedar post because my HOA doesn't allow posts to face out. Mike said the posts would blend into the fence and be less noticeable. He was right, the posts blend nicely. Trim work and columns make the fence stand out like no other. Small wood box protectors were build around the base of the posts so the weed-wackers won't damage them and so they'd last longer. Mike also suggested that I use Sprinkler Shields to protect the fence from sprinkler over-spray stains. Great suggestion, this little device has saved me money by conserving water and protecting the stain on my stain.
He came out and bid the fence. He made a statement that the price of the fence included the understanding that the company's end product would withstand a high level of critical observation and critique.
The actual construction of the fence itself is quite acceptable in that it was plumbed right, constructed to good tolerances and appearance and good quality of materials were implemented.
Before beginning the project, I informed him that I expected the residual mess to be completely cleaned up to my satisfaction. He agreed that this was part and parcel of their conduct of business.
There was approximately 160 running feet of fence to be built. An extension of the fence required a perforation to be drilled in our concrete driveway. The extruding concrete which was added to the hole was never troweled or dressed properly, even after it was pointed out to the construction foreman on more than one occasion. It is truly an eye sore.
Concrete and gravel remained in my neighbor's yard. Nails, used lumber, concrete and other materials were left, never to be collected. I even had a conversation with the foreman who had come to personally correct the deficiencies left by his work crew. While standing by the side of the house I asked him if everything had been left as they found it and he assured me that it was so. I reached down and picked up a 2 foot plus, 1 x 6 inch piece of wood that was laying between his feet and mine and handed it to him. He never said a word but went right on speaking. The fence is built over the majority of the underground sprinkler system on the south side of the back yard. It appears to me you have to go out of your way to accomplish that feat.
Before final payment was made I asked for the man who bid the job to come out. He offered to again send out the foreman to make things right. I informed him I did not want that man on the property, period.
I finally became so frustrated with their inability to rectify the mess that I gave up. I hired other labor to help me andI have been picking it up myself even after 2 lower back fusions, to this day.
If you do not mind finishing their work for them you may choose to use them. My experience is that they will not finish it.
I have waited quite some time to compose this and have never been contacted by this company.
Would I use or recommend this company again? I will leave that to someone's imagination.
"My apologies to Mr. [Member Name Removed]. That person he met at Academy is no longer with our company. He did not represent the quality and reputation of Future Fence. He had every right to be upset. Moving forward, we have learned from that experience and that is why we had only one very unhappy customer in 24 years, Mr [Member Name Removed]."
My only blight would be that he is a bit more expensive than the competition. This last job he was about $1000 more expensive. I told him this and we agreed to split the difference. This was worth it for me since I knew his work and trusted him.
I plan to use him again when the rest of my fence needs replacing.
I pretty much went with NTFF because a couple of my neighbors had fences by them, and theirs looked very good. One of the neighbors is my next door neighbor, and I wanted to match their fence as well.
I did not get estimates from other fence builders. So the price may not have been the cheapest, but I wanted the look and the quality which I think I got.
Matt and Mike were very friendly. Mike is the owner. It was easy to schedule. There was a two week wait, but that was okay with me.The quality of the fence is very good.
I paid extra for the metal posts of the fence shared with my neighbor to be covered, and I was particularly impressed by the quality of how they did that.
During the final walkthrough, Mike pointed out some quality details of the fence, and I was impressed by the details. The staining still has to occur. I need to call them up about that, but I'll bet they do a good job on that as well.
