Preface
Unless Nadine floors owns Galaxie Granite, their radio claim of never using subcontractors is bogus. Nadine's seems to have a serious communication issue within the organization. All the people are extremely nice and seemingly knowledgeable. Sales doesn't talk to installation though, it seems. When I set up the installation for 9-5 for granite and 9-6 for back splash tile, I also set up a viewing for the granite in Dallas- I did not want to go- I'm glad I did- However, I called Nadine's and ask them if I could avoid that part. The salesman said I could waive that. At the same time, I asked if the install could be moved up a week- He seemed to say OK to that. Didn't happen!
-I thought that all was set up for the granite install on 8-29 from another company -- Galaxie which stated we had to come to their place of business to select the stone and assure the layout. See above
2. Went to the Nadine showroom in Plano to select a species of granite and backsplash- got a quote over the phone
3. Went again to change our minds for the granite and backsplash- got another quote, lower in the store
4. got a call from Galaxie stone who said we had to come to their place to select slabs and OK the layout- It's a requirement
5. Set a date for the following Thursday- 8/29 to go and the next Thursday 9/5 for installation of Granite
6 called the salesman and he said that we would waive the viewing and I asked if could he change the install date to 8-29- he said he would
NOTE: Salesman said that Santa Cecelia is very consistent in color and pattern and that we did not need to view the actual stone- All samples I saw were as he said - I went down anyway to look for myself considering how bumfuzzeled this has turned out
7. I somehow I thought that install was scheduled for 8-29 and the tile on Friday, the 30th
8. 8-28- received a call from Nadines on the machine stating that next friday, they would be out to do a backsplash- NO DATE for NEXT Friday- I assumed it would be the 30th -- So I called Galaxie-- No, install would be on the 29th - scheduled for the 5th of Sept-- I called Nadines- The salesman said he would ck and call me back.. Sure enough, he confirmed Galaxie's story.
9. It's a good thing I called. To save a few hundred bucks, I'm ripping out (have) all the tile and am doing the plumbing (unhooking and re-hooking water and drains) . I was planning to pull out the lav sink and the large 4 x 6 counter in the center of the kitchen. NOW I had to wait another week for this to happen- I took Friday off so I could make sure the tile went as planned ( Thursday is my day off) Now I had to take next Friday too
Additional: Seems that Nadines has a communication issues within. ( I know- redundant) Sales doesn't talk to installation and visa versa. Case in point: Sales: we always install on top of plywood. Installers: we always install on top of the base cabinet. This is important, because if you are doing your own tearout, you have to be concerned with the cleanliness of the plywood if the granite is going on top of it- Yeah, I did scrape a lot of glue, THEN I called the install folks- stilll have some sore muscles-But have some clean plywood to use on other stuff. Also, you have to be concerned with the additional height of the granite if installed on top of 3/4and quot; plywood. 3CM will raise your counters about 1.5and quot;- Not an issue if standing, but if sitting on counter stools, It will be an issue for short folks (kids)
10. Install seemed to go OK on the granite Sept 5. I watched the whole thing. All the guys seemed to know what they were doing. Granite is very heavy, It took three guys to carry the 8' pieces in and out of the house. They made a mistake and had to make a 1and quot; patch next to a column. If you know to look for it, it's visible- pattern matching was about a C. The solvent they use is very strong- arrange to be out of the house and open windows for quite awhile after.
11. Tile guys came the next day right after the plumbing was finished. This was about 11:30
12. We picked out grout, they didn't have it with them- This should have been done on the sales floor
13. The tile guys tried to pull out the stove. It would only come out about half way. The granite was too close to the stove. I called Nadines- They wanted to know if the tile guys could finish their work and that they would have someone out to fix the granite at our convenience.
14. I ended up driving to Home Depot - 40 Miles round trip to get the grout- they did pay for the grout, not my gas.
15. Next day I noticed that the counter on the left of the stove was 3/4and quot; farther out from the counter than the granite on the right of the stove. Called Nadine's again
16 Monday, 9/9. I had to work that day, but My wife told me that one guy came out and was trying to get an 8' piece of granite off the base cabinet. She (my wife) called Nadine's and was assured that some help was on the way. It was all trimmed, polished, re-sealed and the workers gone by 3:30
CONCLUSION:
Would I use them again? There was not a MAYBE selection, just yes or no-- I would say MAYBE, but knowing what I do, I would watch the final product more closely
Final quality : Very good- Looks wonderful
Granite: The person measuring could have done a better job- OR the fabricator could have done a better job so it's a drop-in
Tile: once again, grout selection should be done in store, with real grout samples, not plastic.
Over all musing: If you use any contractor, it helps to have a little experience in remodeling, or have someone on hand to help who will lend you their experience
