Having already paid Joe Cayton for the leak detection service and understanding that his crew would be best suited to know where to excavate, I called JC Leak Detection back . . Mr. Cayton apologized and said that he would personally be out on Date C to perform the excavation and repair. He estimated a two day project. I agreed. Later it became clear that JC Leak Detection - at least at the time of my service call - had no "crew" - Mr. Cayton was the whole enchilada.
Mr. Cayton showed up on Date C - late - but performed the excavation. Very little work other than excavation occurred before Mr. Cayton abandoned the Project Site for the day. . . after about 4 hours.
On Date D, Mr. Cayton appeared . . . worked for about an hour and then advised the client that "his daughter's car, while enroute home from college had overheated." I certainly let Mr. Cayton leave for that reported event. Prior to his departure, he mentioned that he had found a filter gasket leak, leaks in various filter system valves and one or more filter panel tears . . . he sought approval to repair same and I concurred.
No show on Date E but parts and equipment remained strewn across my pool area.
On Date F, Mr. Cayton arrived . . . he advised that the leaking pipe was very difficult to access; he asked permission to cut off and cap a fountain line and two jet lines in the pool - I concurred in order to make his job easier. He also then told me that because it was the weekend, he could not get the necessary parts to repair my pool leak . He did however represent that on Date F, he had performed the related filter repairs mentioned above.
Cayton reappeared on the following Monday . . .Date H for you that are following . . .and allegedly fixed the leak. The next day, I discovered water in the area suggesting the leak had not been repaired. I then spent 3 days attempting to get Mr. Cayton to return . . . he never did and avoided my phone calls . . he promised via text to return to the jobsite but never did. He was of course paid in full. He also offered an express warranty.
I excavated the leak area and discovered that Mr. Cayton had created a massive leak using his reciprocating saw in the existing PVC pipe - the new damage was about one inch from the location of the failed repair. In other words, he made the situation worse. In addition, my re-excavation required me to lay on my stomach so that I could use my hands to remove the constant supply of mud that kept flowing into the excavated hole. As I blindly used my hands to excavate the hole, I found that Mr. Cayton had dumped all manner of types of construction debris into the hole that he subsequently buried. . . for example, . . . I encountered a trash bag, pipe pieces, drink containers, etc. Most troubling was the broken reciprocating saw blade I blindly grabbed as I scooped out mud. Although i was not cut, I could have easily been cut by the saw blade as I set about to repair Mr. Cayton's mistakes.
After excavating the hole and confirming the ongoing unrepaired leak and additional new damage, I contacted and retained American Leak Detection to repair the damage. I paid an additional $500 to this contractor - who did a great job; the rate was lower since I personally had excavated the hole and removed that item from the scope of work.
American Leak Detection confirmed that the filter repairs which Mr. Cayton represented -- directly to my face - had been performed had not been performed. I shelled out additional funds to ALD to address those issues.
Joe Cayton and JC Leak Detection suck. I should have sued the p*** as I am a construction lawyer but realize its not worth the headache. Avoid JC Leak Detection as you would a Justin Bieber concert or dental surgery.
