Five Star Foam was incredibly unprofessional. They took far longer than originally stated. They did not perform the work as discussed requiring numerous call-backs. They destroyed my home without any attempt to repair. And as we now know the foam was mixed incorrectly and it is making us all horribly ill. I have spent tens of thousands of dollars on industry experts and doctors as a result of the improperly installed foam. Five Star refuses to stand behind their work and won't return my phone calls. Beware.

Response from Five Star Foam
My company, Five Star Foam, was contracted to install spray foam insulation at the Member’s residence. The product that was installed is Demilec’s Sealection 500; a polyurethane expanding foam. Our company installed the insulation under the extreme scrutiny of Member’s. He spent every day of the installation in the attic making sure that our installers sprayed every inch of the attic. We informed Member that it was our standard policy to leave some of the attic assembly open in order to vent the attic space. Ventilation of attic assemblies is not necessary when applying spray foam in a new construction environment, as the HVAC systems are designed to enclose the pilot light (carbon monoxide) inside of a dedicated duct that is vented to the outside of the attic assembly. Member’s was having a retro fit application done in which the HVAC system is called an “80% furnace”. These units use the air surrounding the pilot light to fuel the fire. By installing spray foam insulation on the underside of the roof deck we would therefore suffocate the system and trap the carbon monoxide. Member insisted that we seal off the entire attic. We inform every homeowner that it is their responsibility to contact a certified HVAC contractor for sizing their new attic assembly. After installation of spray foam insulation Member complained of an annoying smell. Spray Foam Insulation is a new product that has entered an existing environment. We refer to it as a new paint smell; noticeable, but certainly not harmful. Member’s was “overwhelmed” by the smell. I personally went to his residence on several occasions over the next couple of weeks to open windows and help vent the system, each time noticing the dissipation of any odor. Our company went to the extreme of renting an air filtration system (something that we have never paid for except in the case of Member) and placed it in the attic for over two weeks. When I was asked by Member to pick up the filter, I personally went to the house. There was no odor at all anywhere in the house. Member claims that our product was sprayed incorrectly; this is possible. However, if it were installed incorrectly it would still not have any ill effect on his health. The product is either sprayed to hot or too cold if installed incorrectly. If the product is too hot then the insulation will not reach its full rise and thus results in a lower R-value. If it is too cold then you get what is called shrinkage. This is where the insulation separates from the rafters it is sprayed on. In both cases the foam does not perform to its full capacity, but it is NEVER toxic. The only other way in which we can disturb the consistency of the foam is by spraying too much of one product. Spray foam is a two part, polyurethane foam. We create the foam by heating an A and a B side then mixing them together at the tip of the gun that then sprays out the mixed insulation. Once the two products are brought into contact with each other they react in an exothermic chemical reaction which cures in 15-20 seconds. It is finished and stable at this point. If we were to mix the two products disproportionately we would create what is called a crossover. A crossover happens inside of the gun but does not last for very long. It doesn’t last because the gun stops operating when foam sets up inside the gun itself. Per Member own admission he has sprayed another product, a glycol-ether-based deodorizer on top of the insulation that was installed. He applied this thru a separate contractor besides Five Star Foam. There is absolutely no way to measure the effects that this product has on the foam that was sprayed by my company (or the reaction that could have occurred between these two products). By his own admission he states that, “Immediately following the application of the deodorizer, my entire family lost their ability to taste, and being in the house became even more unbearable”. - http://www.greenbuildingadvisor.com/blogs/dept/musings/spray-foam-jobs-lingering-odor-problems Our company has done everything in our power to meet Member’s needs. We were contracted by him to spray foam insulation, we informed him of the type of application that was necessary in a home that was designed in the fashion that his was built, when told to seal the entire attic assembly we then informed him of the need for ventilation and/or different HVAC handlers. When addressed with Member’s discomfort to odor, we addressed his issue with several trips to his house and provided him with an air filtration system. By his own admission, he has altered the state of the foam we sprayed in his house by adding additional elements to the atmosphere in the attic. Demilec’s products have been recognized by numerous organizations including The US Green Building Council, the NAHB Research Center and GREENGUARD for Children and Schools.
