I had a leak at main control of sprinkler system. Manual shutoff valve did not shut water off completely and water would leak out ahead of master control unit. Water leak was causing a puddle not to mention cost on water bill. Control unit also leaked but it was manually shut off.
I did research on neighborhood sites, yelp, and Angie's list and found best providers for our area. The number one provider indicated on Angie's list that they were not accepting any new customers. Smart Earth was a close second in ratings. I called them and Gabriel said he had an open slot in a few days. He asked if that would be OK. A day before the appointed time they called and left a reminder message on when they would come. They were scheduled to come at 11:30 AM. Around 10:45 AM they called and asked if they could come a little early and said they would be here in about 30 minutes. They arrived exactly as indicated.
Chris investigated the problem and agreed to replace manual valve under the ground and add backflow device to bring system up to code. I asked him several questions about adjustments, water pressure, and winterizing, He had very practical answers for all questions. He also added a master control valve under the ground so that water would only get to backflow device and rest of system when sprinkler was on. He told me to wait until backflow test was completed before using system.
After he left, I started wondering whether the wiring to the master control valve would actually work (long story on why I was wondering this - mostly due to what had happened over last several years with system). I called Gabriel and he said it was fine for me to test system. When I tested it, I had to manually adjust the master control valve. I decided to wait until backflow testing was done before asking about this.
A few days later they tested the backflow and I asked about operation of system. It was clear to the backflow tester that the master control valve had to be manually turned on for system to work. He checked the control unit and determined that there was no wire connected to the master valve terminal. This wire was connected to zone 6 which was not used instead. He corrected the connection and all was well.
When Gabriel visited to evaluate the proposed work he was able in less than 30 minutes to locate all of the 9 buried valve boxes which had disappeared under many years of turf growth - a process requiring considerable skill. He quickly sized up the scope of the work, explained our options clearly, and followed up promptly with an itemized quote.
As the work progressed Gabriel was always willing and able to clearly explain technical details relating to the design and installation of our drip and sprinkler systems. As a result we feel confidant that we will ourselves be able to handle any routine maintenance or minor adaptations of the drip service if we add or relocate plants.
Both the drip installation and the sprinkler adaptation proceeded as planned and on schedule. We are very satisfied with the results, and we have already recommended Smart Earth Sprinklers to several friends.
It was truly a pleasure to work with Gabriel and his associate, Chris.!
I searched Angie's List for help, because the person I have used for over twenty years can no long help me.
Smart Earth Sprinklers was my third call, after my plumber. (The plumber's recommendation, also on Angie's List, could not help for another 16 days.) Gabriel Barr was the first to give a personal response. His schedule was also booked for ten days out; but he checked it, and quickly noted that he would be in my neighborhood within two days, and offered to come to us at the end of that morning.
Gabriel is quiet, direct, and personable. He called back to confirm our appointment. He arrived promptly when promised. Removed his boots to pass through the house. Quickly assessed the situation, promptly gathered his equipment, and went to work. I should add that I asked him to clear, and save, the top-dressing gravel at the site of the leak, so it could be replaced when the repair was complete. (Not easy in the location, or for the fact that the work site was a soggy mess.) He agreeably did everything I asked, and wasted no time.
My husband and I could not be more pleased that we have found Smart Earth Sprinklers and Gabriel Barr. He is now the only phone number on our list for our irrigation system maintenance and repair.
I was very happy with the service we received from Gabriel. He took his time to examine everything and explain all the problems to me. He explained how he had programmed the sprinkler schedule and showed me how to do it myself. He also showed me how to adjust the overall watering length without having to reprogram each station. He was extremely professional and responsive. When I called him over the weekend to determine if the forecasted rain would mean we would need to delay his visit, he called me back immediately, even though his office was closed. On the day of our appointment, he called to let me know that he was on his way, and he arrived as scheduled. All in all, we were very happy with the service and look forward to having a better looking lawn!
Gabriel called me the Saturday before the appointment to remind me that he was coming. He also told me that if we was running ahead of schedule (how many people usually are?) he would call to make sure that it was ok to come by earlier for the work. On Monday, he WAS a bit ahead of schedule and called me approximately 3 hours before the scheduled appointment. That ended up working out great for me.
Gabriel was a very nice guy and extremely pleasant to talk to. Despite the quality work (and the speed/efficiency of that work) we were able to fit in a friendly chat. He quickly dug up the offending sprinkler, located the leak, replaced the PVC pipe, and set the sprinkler/sod back into the ground. His work disturbed the ground so little that my wife couldn't tell where the work had been performed. I've seen plumbing and utility work that killed the grass in the surrounding area, so I was rather impressed!
After he did the work we hired him to perform, he wanted to make sure that the entire system was working well. He checked out each station and tuned sprinklers that weren't spraying optimally. He also replaced some sprinkler heads (free of charge) that were inappropriate for their function.
As a side bonus, he informed me that the work he performed was warrantied for one year.
Gabriel is a great guy, Smart Earth is a great company, and if we still lived in Austin, he would be our "sprinkler guy". It's always heartening to see people who take pride in their work!
He was polite, professional, friendly and knowledgeable. I have already recommended him to a neighbor who had a sprinkler problem.
