The cost of an emergency surgery was given as $1000. After I confirmed my Care Credit spending Limit, cost was then raised by 300%.in undisclosed fees (including the fees from a separate animal hospital), The Vet denies this and states she gave all cost up front. However, my phone record clearly indicate a trail from HTCA to Care Credit Customer service. and back to HTAC. If I had the true cost up front and knew the cost was so far out of my reach, why would I had made those calls concerning my spending limit. The main cost was the emergency care for overnight monitoring... I was not allowed to remove my pet and take him to hi primary vet for a second opinion. The vet said she could not in good conscience allow my pet to leave. All options were eliminated until all that was left was euthanasia...that is.....until they offered surrender of ownership. There was no signing over of ownership, no documentation, and it was done all over the phone. Despite having sufficient funds for the services HTAC would charge, they used the potential cost of a separate facility (ER) to coerce the surrender to them. The next day, I attempted to see my pet one last time to say goodbye and the on-staff Veterinarian refused any visitation. she did this without assessing the situation .she didn't even stick hear head out from the back room to even take a look at me. instead she sends the receptionist back with the news she should be giving me. I am told I did not have permission from the and quot;new ownerand quot; a technician employed by the hospital. I was told I could leave a note for the new owner about Hunter but was later informer by the Hospital owner that same veterinarian instructed the employee not to have any contact with me (the reason has never been disclosed). I was charged $185 for the exam and x rays but never received the invoice until May when I requested it. On the document for services I was charged for, my pet's name had been changed from Hunter to another name. That name matched the what the employee re-named my cat.
45 days later in response to a Yelp review, the owner of the hospital alleged abuse and neglect and through company email disclosed my person information as well as a detailed description of my pet's condition from the medical chart and a detailed description of recovery. All documented responses, the hospital owner describes a near dead animal with an approximate loss/deficiency of body mass of 4-5 lbs. He falsely states that I admitted to willingly offering my pet 111 elastic hair band and observed him eating the objects that led to a gastric blockage. the Hospital owner defends their action by stating the cats condition was due to long term neglect without any proof. of further inquiry into my care or my pets living conditions. HTAC never requested Hunter's previous medical records proving that at 4 lbs., there was no severe body mass loss that had occurred. When I saw the HTAC medical chart for Hunter, my name was entirely incorrect, X rays had the incorrect animal's name, no pre-surgical lab work was done, nothing was done for his and quot;near deadand quot; state to stabilize before surgery, an estimated 3-4 hours had elapsed before surgery started, No pain management was documented, the emergency overnight care (which was what drove the cost out of range) DID NOT occur. He went home with the technician that night. The new owner actual was identified as early as part of the surgical notes, the vet who saw my pet didn't even sign her own medical records. The hospital owner sends a clear message that Hunter is allegedly brought in and almost dead, dehydrated, could barely stand and hold his head up. He also reports how he barely survived the surgery and the hard recovery he had ahead of him. the Hospital owner says that his body temperature did not elevate to a point in which they though he would survive for another 5 days. He describes a frail, weak animal fighting to stay alive, rescued from his previous caregiver's uncaring presence by a group of people with no motivation other than the animal well-being.
I received a huge break which prompted me to write this review in mid-August. I was informed that multiple employees were freely discussing my case on their public Facebook pages. From 2/26/14, posted was the actual surgery of my pet and his x rays...this alone give a strong argument that there was a special interest in my cat from the beginning. Lounging immediately next to the active surgical area, leaning against the table/hands in the pocket is a visible staff member.....not gowned or gloved. the number of hair tie is also reported to be 45% less than what was publicly stated. On 2/28/14 (1 and 1/2 days after surgery) Hunter's new owner is shown handling the cat and dangling him in front of the camera with no consideration for the long incision along his mid-section. which is clearly shown and exposed. His lower extremities are unsupported; most likely pulling and stretching at the surgical wound. In post comments, a co-worker confronts the new owner about how she is handling Hunter and her response.... is and quot;psshs oh. whatever!and quot; He is fineand quot;. An this she fishes for compliment on her nursing abilities ( Interesting fact, the Texas Nursing Board recently sent Hometown Animal Care a cease and desist letter for referring to their technicians as Nurses; that's against the law). Lastly, Hunter is pictured on a dirty blanket. He appears alert, wide awake, and content. In no way does he look like the near dead animal the hospital owner reported multiple times to the public to explain the series of events that led to the loss of my pet.
It is astounding that 2 veterinarians are having to publicly defend their actions and reputation and their staff did not even have the courtesy or respect to inform them of their actions and the damaging evidence against their employer they are responsible for. The individual who has my cat, did not feel it necessary to disclose her involvement to those two doctor who are fight so she can keep my cat. Other posts separate to this case were also seen that clearly show a staff who conduct is questionable. (In one instance, flinging of actual animal genitalia at each other was amusingly discussed).
A new report was done on 6/30/14 by Dawn Denny from KXAN. She presented an extremely poor report limiting the story to and quot;someone who couldn't pay his bill and still wants his cat backand quot;. I was given 2 sentences. The remainder was devoted to the veterinary staff to sufficiently argue their side. Even the x rays shown are cropped to hide the fact that the wrong animal name is stamped on the film. The news station has flatly refused to consider any more input despite proven facts that were omitted and/or clearly incorrect.
Currently this case is under investigation by the Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners.
Also, my dog has had a bad reaction to the Lepto vaccine (temporary paralysis) so I prefer not to have it administered. The previous vet fought me on it but Hometown agreed that the risks outweighed the benefits in her case and did not push it.
Since her annual exam in April she has been boarded three times. They charge $24/night for dogs. If you want them to bathe them it is $19.50 and nail trim is about $12. The first time we went she growled at the guy trying to put a lead on her (from behind my legs) but instead of getting fearful he was just super patient with her. She now recognizes the people who take her back so no more growling (clearly they are nice to her) though she still goes very grudgingly. I also have seen on her chart that they have in big bold letters and quot;SHY. GO SLOW.and quot; Which I really appreciate.
I had them bathe her for the first time this week and there was a delay in bringing her out when I went to pick her up. The guy apologized and explained he had been brushing her out and the hair just kept coming and coming. I told him that was a more than acceptable reason for a delay, as the more hair he gets off her the less that ends up in clumps in my living room floor.
All in all I can recommend Hometown without reservation or hesitation. The staff has been great with my challenging dog and the prices are about 25% cheaper for vet services than our last vet in south Austin and they are cheaper for boarding than I had paid (also in south Austin).
